It is said that an elderly sheikh was having dinner with his children in the courtyard of his house when a wild goat came running towards them from a nearby pen. The sheikh asked his children to hurry and tie up that goat. One of the sons, named Awad, who was timid and reckless, got up clumsily from his seat, either out of fear or to take on that task. He bumped into the only lamp that was lighting the courtyard and broke it, plunging the place into darkness. As he moved, he placed his first foot in the middle of the dinner plate, followed by the second foot onto his father’s belly, causing him pain. At that moment, the sheikh shouted at the top of his voice to the rest of his children, saying: “Tie up Awad and let the goat go.”
The story told by this tale encapsulates the condition of our Arab nation and guides what needs to be done to stop the bleeding of suffering from the crises it faces in all aspects of life. It emphasizes that the greatest calamity has its primary source in the dangers and mistakes inherent in the self and its capabilities, and it is essential to address them beforehand before confronting any affliction that obstructs the path.
If we look at the political and security situation, we find that the world has returned to an era where wars separate conflicts and agreements are imposed by force. As stated in the article "Might Abolishes Right," published in Foreign Affairs on July 13, 2025, “Trump's threats to seize lands like Gaza and Greenland reflect a dangerous shift towards reviving the legitimacy of invasion and weakening the prohibition against the use of force, which threatens the collapse of the international system established by the Kellogg-Briand Pact and the United Nations Charter.” The Zionists, the West, and others who harbor hatred for Islam and Arabism have exploited this circumstance, leading a campaign to redraw the maps of the Middle East in preparation for solidifying what they call Greater Israel. They incited sectarian strife, then waged wars in Gaza and Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan.
These enemies would not have been able to achieve their goals without the support and assistance provided to them by many like “Awad the fool,” who exist among us as individuals and leaders in Hamas, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan. Others are present in other specific Arab entities, becoming claws for the enemies through their blatant interventions with money and weapons to ignite the fires of crises in the Arab world, and assisting the enemies in stirring up discord and hatred among the sons of the Arab nation. They do not hesitate to launch tasteless media campaigns and malicious political and security plots against the values of Islam and Arabism, and against some Arab countries that have honorable positions regarding their nation’s issues, such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
What the Arab world is witnessing, represented by 22 member states of the Arab League, is strikingly similar to what Andalusia experienced a thousand years ago. The kings of the taifa states established between 1020 and 1030 nearly 22 small states. Their conditions, like ours today, were characterized by instability, infighting, and the weaving of plots and conspiracies among themselves, seeking assistance from enemies against one another. Therefore, it was not surprising that they ended up an easy prey for Alfonso VI, who humiliated their dignity, killed many of them, and took control of their lands and plundered their wealth.
Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi described the situation at that time in his letters about the kings of the taifa states, saying: “By God, if they knew that worshipping the crosses would solve their affairs, they would hasten to it. We see them seeking help from the Christians, allowing them into the sanctuaries of Muslims and their children, and their men carrying them as captives to their lands, and perhaps they would willingly give them cities and fortresses, emptying them of Islam and filling them with bells.” The founding king, Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, may God have mercy on him, articulated the current situation in his speech before the pilgrims in 1930, stating: “The bitter truth we must acknowledge is that we Muslims do not love one another; rather, we plot against one another even in the face of enemies, and we find no shame in it. You will not find a bond among Muslims that strengthens them, nor a camaraderie that shields them from adversities; the king is the enemy of the king, the merchant is the enemy of the merchant, and so on,” according to what is mentioned in the book “The Saudis and the Islamic Solution” by Muhammad Jalal Koshk.
Will the Arabs take a lesson from history as they see their condition deteriorating like that of the era of the taifa kings, with the image of Alfonso VI reappearing before their eyes in the form of the State of Israel and the figure of the Zionist criminal Netanyahu and his associates? If they wish for safety and stability, they must first eradicate the cells of weakness and danger within them, working united through their regional organizations, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, to identify, expose, and link the likes of “Awad” present within the Arab and Islamic body and paralyze their movements. After that, they will be able to confront the “wild beasts” attacking them, as controlling them then will not be difficult.
If they wish to improve their living conditions, they must also take the initiative to rid themselves of the likes of “Awad the reckless” who occupy control centers as administrative leaders, advisors, and workers in economic, financial, cultural, social, and media institutions. The Arab and Islamic world has been afflicted by many who, in a moment of negligence, have occupied high positions and leadership roles that have enabled them to plan and implement the future paths of their nations, while they lack the skill and ability to grasp the implications of what they are doing or its consequences on the peoples and nations. They have become floundering in hollow recklessness without clear guidance, believing themselves to be reformers and developers, while they are wreaking havoc in their nations.
This has led to crises and economic, financial, cultural, social, and media deterioration in many Arab and Islamic countries. They are aptly described by the noble verse: ﴿Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life while they thought that they were doing well﴾ [Al-Kahf: 104].
The clear truth that all Arabs must recognize is that confusion and misery manifest clearly when values, behaviors, and concepts change. At that point, you will see truths as falsehoods and lies as truths. Unfortunately, this is the reality of our Arab world in the present age.
Conclusion:
From the words of the poet Faisal Al-Riyahi Al-Buqami, may God have mercy on him:
Some Arabs and their conditions are hidden
Above us is the molar and below us is the canine
Twenty states and more than that
We have become fuel for the fire and the firewood
In it, the hypocrite curses the rebel
And in it, the thief mocks the swindler
And in it, the flatterer calls upon the traitor
And in it, the fool laughs at the pretender
And their doors and homes are open
To the monkey, the pig, and the squirrel
