I watched the film "12 Angry Men," produced in 1957, a few days ago. It tells the story of a defendant waiting for a jury made up of 12 individuals—each with their own profession and specialty—to decide his fate, all gathered in one room around one table. This film has astonished audiences and critics alike, who still, to this day, at the time of writing my article, speak of it as if it were a miraculous film that will never be repeated, and that global cinema will not produce anything like it!
In my opinion, the film did not achieve this astonishment solely because of the dialogue or the script, but because of the profound "idea" that renews itself for the viewer with each viewing, allowing them to read and see it differently from themselves first, and from everyone who has spoken about the film before.
To be fair, this is not the idea of my article, and I will not discuss the artistic creativity of the film, but rather the deep lesson that struck me, which is "the power of critical thinking" and the importance of mental creativity in confronting biases, reading preconceived notions, and analyzing them. This was illustrated when the director placed his characters in a small room, but the thought within it was vast, expansive, vibrant with life, surrounded by emotion, and liberated by reason.
The story begins with just one man, standing with his mind against a tide of identical minds in their views and judgments. They were surprised by his very different opinion, and at that precise moment, the seed of critical thinking was planted in the viewer's heart by the film: questioning, not out of objection, but out of responsibility.
In the film, creativity manifested in this man's ability to use questions instead of answers, and to sow systematic doubt in a smart and calm manner through which he rearranged reality, not through force, but with the strength of argument and evidence consistent with the event. Critical thinking is not only a path to achieving justice, but it is our way to reach our goals sustainably and successfully, as it helps individuals analyze situations accurately, evaluate information objectively, and make decisions based on deep understanding, not on impressions or biases as shown in the film. A critical thinker does not settle for what is presented to them, nor do they succumb to superficial ideas, but instead seeks the better and transcends the production of repetition.
I also see critical thinking as a foundation for innovation, which does not arise in an environment that accepts everything as it is, but rather stimulates questioning, breaking patterns, and searching for new and unconventional solutions. A critical innovator sees opportunities amidst challenges and transforms problems into gateways for discovering unprecedented ideas. Critical thinking provides tools for evaluating steps, reviewing plans, determining the feasibility of goals, and dealing with obstacles flexibly and consciously, keeping one focused on their goal without being distracted by influences or frustrations.
In conclusion, I saw in "12 Angry Men" that critical thinking is the compass that guides us toward seeing things in their deep reality; it is excellence, it is the fuel that ignites the spark of innovation, and it is the tool with which we refine our goals to achieve them smartly and with quality; for the mind is a critical force, and creativity does not always mean inventing something new, but sometimes lies in seeing what everyone else sees... in a different way.
