I watched a movie two days ago featuring the Egyptian artist Tamer Hosny, which addresses the obsession some people have with the spotlight of social media and the wealth that its fame brings. However, the film, through the story of the protagonist and his family members, also presents, in a comedic framework, the prices that must be paid for this fame and fortune, which have led them into the depths of its trivialities, under the management of an exploitative agent who cares only about achieving "the trend" at any cost!
The protagonist comes to the conclusion that the obsession with fame is destructive after being forced by his agent to divorce his wife on camera to achieve the trend, pushing them to fabricate humiliating situations for the sake of fame. The pursuit of "the trend" is costly and has caused the family to fall apart and lose many of its values and morals, despite the warnings and advice from the aunt, played by the artist Mimi Jamal with great charm!
He decides, along with some friends, to cut the global internet cable that runs along the Egyptian coast, causing all internet services and networks to go down, driving people crazy due to the loss of their smartphones' value. However, the repercussions of their act also affect services that touch people's lives, leading to the disruption of banks, hospitals, ministries, universities, airports, and trains, and chaos spreads through the city as people are unable to secure their needs or purchase their living essentials!
The protagonist regrets his actions and seeks to reconnect the cable he cut, but the police arrest him during his attempt. It later becomes clear that the internet outage was due to the actions of an international gang, unrelated to the cable he cut, which turns out to be a local cable belonging to the resort across the coast. The resort owner drops the case, and the protagonist emerges to discover that the problem is not with the internet, which provides indispensable benefits, but with the people themselves and how they exploit social media!
Tamer Hosny reunites with his wife and the rest of his family, and they realize that fame built on triviality and the wealth gained from that fame are not sources of security or happiness in life. However, the film insists on ending with a scene steeped in sarcastic comedy when the conservative aunt marries their agent and herself becomes a "trend"!
