Some bet on the survival of the Assad regime and worked to break its isolation and save it from the responsibility for the brutal acts of genocide committed by its militias against its people. His policies were not understood at the time, and his justifications for fearing the victory of terrorist organizations were not justified in light of the killing and torture that the Assad regime practiced against its people without distinction!
After the fall of the regime and the victory of the opposition, it was necessary to help the Syrians turn the page, restore peace, and begin reconstruction in their country. However, the hostile policy continued to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the new authority or to attempt to obstruct its gaining international recognition and receiving aid that would help alleviate the living suffering and restore normal life. This policy has been, and still is, incomprehensible and unjustified regarding the suffering of the Syrian people and the importance of dealing with the new reality in a way that serves the interests of this people, ensures their security, and mitigates the risks of divisions and civil war!
When President Trump came to the region and announced from Riyadh the lifting of sanctions on Syria in response to a request from the Saudi Crown Prince in a swift decision that surprised the pillars of his administration before the world, it was expected that the governments and peoples of Arab countries would celebrate the decision and show gratitude to the Saudi Crown Prince. The step aligns with the slogans of Arab solidarity raised by most Arab regimes, and indeed, most Arabs welcomed the decision and praised the Saudi role in it. However, there were those who received the decision to lift the sanctions with indifference and unleashed their media and specters on social media platforms to wage a war of insult and betrayal on behalf of others, in a position that is also incomprehensible. The main goal is to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people and spare them the horrors of divisions and civil war, as they have suffered enough from killing, torture, destruction, and displacement!
While it is acceptable for governments to have the right to determine their political positions in accordance with their interests and sovereignty, what is unacceptable is the adoption of contradictory positions in their relations. They practice dissimulation in politics and hostility in the media under the pretext of media and societal freedom of opinion. No one can convince me that a unilateral regime whose faces change only every 30 years possesses a free opinion!
In short, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always worked to prioritize the interests of Arab peoples and extended a helping hand to their governments, rising above all insults based on a moral belief in its fraternal role towards Arabs and its leadership responsibilities in the region!
