Hurricane "Vance" has intensified to a Category 2 over the waters of the Eastern Pacific, continuing to move north and northwest off the southwestern coasts of Mexico, amid warnings of dangerous waves and strong marine currents.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported in its latest update this morning (Saturday) that "Vance" was located about 590 kilometers south and southwest of Acapulco, and approximately 750 kilometers south and southeast of Manzanillo, accompanied by sustained winds reaching about 175 kilometers per hour.
Winds at 175 kilometers per hour
The center explained that the hurricane is moving north and northwest at a speed of about 11 kilometers per hour, while the atmospheric pressure at its center has dropped to 965 millibars.
Hurricane-force winds extend up to about 45 kilometers from its center, while tropical storm-force winds extend up to about 240 kilometers.
Warnings of dangerous waves
Although no official coastal warnings or advisories have been issued as of the last update, the center urged residents in the southwestern coastal areas of Mexico to monitor the developments of the hurricane and its path in the coming hours.
Waves generated by "Vance" are expected to affect parts of the southern and southwestern coasts of Mexico over the weekend and extend into the following week, with the possibility of strong waves and rip currents that may pose a danger to swimmers and marine activities.
Expected fluctuations in strength
The center noted the possibility of some fluctuations in the intensity of "Vance" throughout the day, before beginning a gradual weakening starting tonight and into Sunday.
The hurricane had shown a noticeable acceleration in its strength over the previous hours, as its wind speed increased from about 150 kilometers per hour on Friday morning to 175 kilometers per hour on the same evening, nearing the level of a major hurricane.
