In an incident reminiscent of movie scenes, a man from Washington state turned an airport parking lot in Southern California into a chaotic scene after he seized a tug designed for pulling planes and recklessly drove it among vehicles and aircraft, before colliding with one of the vehicles and attempting to take over another truck, ending his adventure with police intervention and his arrest.
Authorities announced the arrest of Skyler Jay Barr, a 26-year-old from Everett, Washington, on suspicion of vehicle theft, vandalism, and entering a restricted area, according to Sergeant Gerard McCann, spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Video footage circulating online showed Barr driving the tug recklessly inside the "John Wayne" airport parking lot, dangerously approaching an Alaska Airlines plane, in a scene that raised concerns about the potential for a larger accident.
Infiltrated from a restricted area
According to the New York Post, the incident began around 5:30 PM on Tuesday when Barr, who was waiting for his flight, slipped through a door leading to a restricted area outside the passenger terminals.
After descending a staircase to the ground services area, he reached a zone designated for operations related to preparing aircraft, where specialized teams handle the transport of luggage, fuel, food, and other supplies.
Allegations suggest that Barr seized a plane tug near gate 12, then drove it toward gate 7, before reaching the area belonging to American Airlines, where he attempted to board one of the company’s vehicles.
During his movement, he collided with another vehicle, and it is suspected that he attempted to take over a truck designated for emptying the sewage tanks of planes, which increased the danger of the situation inside the airport parking lot.
10 minutes ended the chaos
The reckless tour did not last long; authorities managed to apprehend Barr about ten minutes after the incident began.
Marisa Anvert, communications director at "John Wayne" airport, told the California Post that the arrest took about ten minutes.
The aircraft maneuvering area is a restricted zone for passengers, and entry is only permitted for authorized personnel, due to its use in moving equipment and vehicles around the planes and carrying out ground operations.
After his arrest, Barr was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of the injuries he sustained before being booked into jail.
The circumstances of the incident remain unclear, as it is not yet known whether Barr was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
