Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, the brother of King Charles, is engaged in a legal battle with the British Thames Valley Police, challenging the legality of the search warrants used by authorities prior to his arrest last February in connection with an investigation into alleged misconduct during his time in public office.
Mountbatten-Windsor's lawyers have filed for judicial review to contest the search warrants issued against his properties in Sandringham and Royal Lodge in Windsor, as first reported by the Daily Telegraph.
The Thames Valley Police confirmed that they have entered into legal proceedings concerning search warrants previously obtained from the Central Criminal Court, adding that the ongoing proceedings make it inappropriate to comment further.
Court Session (Thursday)
The court is scheduled to hold a session next Thursday afternoon to consider Mountbatten-Windsor's request to annul the search warrants.
The session will initially be held in private, with the judge first considering a request made by the police to keep certain documents and information confidential.
A judge at the Central Criminal Court issued the search warrants on February 18, one day before Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest. The lawsuit he filed includes the Chief of Thames Valley Police and the Central Criminal Court.
Search of His Properties After Arrest
Following his arrest, police were seen for several days searching his properties at Marsh Farm in Sandringham, as well as his former home, Royal Lodge, in the Windsor area.
The arrest occurred on his sixty-sixth birthday, after a series of documents emerged related to Jeffrey Epstein, published by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The documents included emails that suggested, according to authorities and media reports, that Mountbatten-Windsor shared official documents with Epstein and others during the time he served as the British trade envoy.
The Epstein Case and Its Consequences for Andrew
King Charles stripped his brother of his titles following the emergence of messages indicating that he maintained his relationship with Epstein after publicly announcing the severance of that relationship.
Mountbatten-Windsor also lost the titles of prince and Duke of York, along with his home and official status, while several charities and companies associated with him distanced themselves.
After his arrest in February, he was taken to a police station in Aylesham, before being released later while remaining under investigation. A photo taken as he left the police station showed him looking exhausted.
The Investigation is Ongoing
The Thames Valley Police confirm that their investigation into the case is still ongoing, having previously announced in an update that they are working in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice to obtain additional information that may be relevant to the investigation.
Investigators have also clarified that allegations related to sexual misconduct could fall within the scope of the investigation concerning suspected misconduct during his time in public office.
Mountbatten-Windsor continues to deny any wrongdoing regarding his relationships with Epstein.
The challenge to the search warrants represents Mountbatten-Windsor's first significant public legal action against the authorities since his arrest, as he continues to defend his position while British police carry on with their investigations.
