The European Commission is moving towards classifying Amazon's AWS cloud computing service and Microsoft's Azure as "gatekeepers" under the Digital Markets Act, with a decision expected in November, according to a report by Bloomberg cited by The Next Web from informed sources.
The report indicated that the ongoing investigation suggests both services will be subject to European rules, although the draft remains subject to change, and the announcement date may also shift. The Commission has not yet set an official date for the decision.
In June, the Commission informed both companies of a preliminary opinion, stating that their services represent an important gateway between businesses and their customers, despite not meeting the usual quantitative thresholds for classification. If the final decision is approved, it may impose obligations regarding data transfer and interoperability, granting the two companies six months to comply.
