Hiccups are considered one of the most common physical phenomena, but sometimes they turn into a signal that deserves attention.
Hiccups, or (singultus), occur when the diaphragm experiences a sudden and involuntary contraction, which is the muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen and is responsible for breathing movement. When this contraction happens, the epiglottis at the top of the airway reflexively closes, causing air to collide with the closed vocal cords, resulting in the characteristic sound that accompanies a bout of hiccups.
Medical authorities indicate that the most common causes of this condition are related to simple daily habits; such as eating quickly, drinking carbonated beverages, or experiencing stress and excitement, in addition to sudden transitions between very cold and hot foods, which may cause spasms in the diaphragm. Typically, the episode disappears within a few minutes without intervention, although some resort to methods that help calm breathing, such as holding the breath for a few seconds, sipping cold water, or breathing into a paper bag, which are techniques primarily based on distraction and resetting the breathing rhythm.
Although hiccups are generally considered harmless in most cases, their persistence for a long time or unusual recurrence may indicate a deeper health issue, such as disorders of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine, or a hormonal or neurological imbalance.
The importance of monitoring accompanying symptoms increases when hiccups appear with heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, or severe fatigue, as these signs may indicate the necessity for medical examination.
The danger peaks when hiccups are accompanied by headache, dizziness, nausea, difficulty speaking, or vision disturbances, as these are indicators that require immediate contact with emergency services; due to the possibility of being related to a stroke that requires urgent intervention. While hiccups often remain a transient phenomenon, their transformation into a persistent condition or one accompanied by neurological symptoms makes them a warning sign that should not be ignored.
