A rare medical incident occurred in Hebei Province, northern China, when a woman in her seventies woke up inside a refrigerated coffin after her family believed she had passed away, only for her health to deteriorate again and for her to die shortly thereafter.
The details of the incident date back to a village in the city of Hejin, where the woman had been suffering for a long time from cerebral thrombosis, in addition to being diagnosed with cancer.
On September 8, her visible vital signs ceased, prompting her family to believe she had died, and she was transferred to a coffin equipped with a temporary cooling system in preparation for burial procedures.
However, on the evening of the following day, her son's wife heard faint moans coming from inside the coffin, prompting the family to quickly open it and retrieve the woman.
According to local media reports, the woman partially regained consciousness and opened her eyes on September 11, to the astonishment of her family members. However, her health remained critical, and she was unable to eat or drink water, before her condition deteriorated again and her death was announced on the same day. Her funeral was held on September 13.
Local doctors explained the incident as a possible case of "apparent death," a rare condition in which the body's vital functions decline to extremely low levels, making breathing and pulse very weak, and the patient may enter a state of deep unconsciousness that makes it difficult to verify death based solely on visible signs.
The incident sparked a discussion on social media platforms, with some users criticizing the family for proceeding with burial procedures before obtaining an official death certificate or conducting adequate medical assessment.
Conversely, specialists emphasized the importance of following established medical procedures when verifying and declaring death, especially in cases where vital signs have severely declined.
