The British star Ed Sheeran could not hold back his tears during his concert in Philadelphia, USA, speaking for the first time to his audience about the crisis surrounding his recent tour and the widespread political controversy related to positions on the war in Gaza and freedom of expression.
Sheeran's appearance came amid the fallout from the decision to exclude American singer Macklemore from participating in the tour, following his supportive statements for Palestinians and criticism of the war. The decision sparked angry reactions, including the resignation of several members of Sheeran's band in protest against the tour management's stance, coinciding with pro-Palestinian protests outside Lincoln Financial Field.
In front of the audience inside the stadium and the protesters outside, Sheeran appeared deeply affected, before covering his face with his hands and crying, speaking about the decisions he was forced to make during the crisis and the repercussions on his tour in the United States.
Sheeran emotionally stated, "I had to make difficult decisions, and I know I made mistakes because of that, and I am very, very sorry for them."
The British artist revealed that he seriously considered stepping away from music during the crisis, explaining that he never sought to present himself as a "politically active artist," but found himself in the midst of a highly sensitive political discussion related to the war in Gaza, the limits of freedom of expression, and artists' positions on public issues.
The concert in Philadelphia turned into a personal moment for Sheeran, as he transitioned from singing in front of his audience to speaking openly about the pressures he faced and the decisions he said he is reconsidering in light of what happened.
