U.S. President Donald Trump approved the conversion of the proposed "Arc de Triomphe" project near Arlington National Cemetery in Washington into a military facility dedicated to the storage and deployment of drones and sniper ammunition, in a move he said was made for national security reasons.
Trump clarified on Sunday that he agreed to a request from the military regarding the change in the project's use, without disclosing specific threats that he based his decision on.
Last week, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that the arch, which stands about 76 meters tall, would not pose a danger to air traffic, but it required the installation of a "perpetual flame" at its peak, which removed one of the major obstacles related to its proximity to the capital's airspace.
The project is part of a plan proposed by Trump to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, but it faced objections from aviation experts who warned of the implications of its location near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington.
Additionally, a number of veterans have filed lawsuits against the project, arguing that its construction would affect the historic sightline extending between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
The "Arc de Triomphe" is part of a broader initiative by Trump to reshape several landmarks and symbolic spaces in Washington, alongside other projects that include the creation of a new celebration hall at the White House, the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and the redevelopment of the golf course in East Potomac Park.
