The Egyptian Ministry of Interior revealed the circumstances surrounding a video that sparked widespread reactions in recent days, showing a child with special needs being beaten during a speech therapy session inside his home in the city of Al-Obour in Qalyubia Governorate.
The incident dates back to July 28, when a speech therapist was conducting a session for the child inside his family's residence, before his father - who is a company manager residing in the jurisdiction of the First Al-Obour Police Station - discovered what had happened through surveillance cameras installed in the child's room. The recordings showed the therapist physically assaulting him, although the report did not indicate any injuries.
The next day, the child's father went to the police station and filed a report against the therapist, prompting the security authorities to act and apprehend her at that time, before the video was circulated again recently. When confronted, she admitted to committing the act, claiming that her actions were intended to "educate the child." The circulation of the video coincided with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood's monitoring of the incident, where it clarified that the child is seven years old and suffers from autism spectrum disorder, and had been receiving home rehabilitation sessions during July.
The head of the council, Dr. Sahar Al-Sunbati, directed the provision of legal and psychological support for the child and his family, and to send a lawyer to attend the investigations, in addition to providing specialized psychological support sessions. According to the council's follow-up, the accused was charged with endangering a child, assault, and bullying, while the therapist denied the accusations, asserting that what she did was "to correct his behavior." These statements remain part of her defense, while the public prosecution is responsible for determining legal accountability based on evidence and investigations. The reopening of the case file came after the video was circulated again on social media, prompting the relevant authorities to continue the investigations and gather information related to the nature of the therapist's work in preparation for taking legal action.
