An Egyptian court ruled to accept the appeal submitted by blogger Habiba Reda in form but rejected it in substance, while upholding the sentence issued against her in the case related to publishing content that was deemed by the investigative authorities to violate public morals via social media platforms, with a suspension of the three-year prison sentence starting from the date of the ruling, and obliging her to pay costs.
The economic court had previously issued a ruling sentencing Habiba Reda to six months in prison and fining her 100,000 Egyptian pounds, along with a financial bail of 20,000 Egyptian pounds, after accusations were directed at her for publishing video clips described as indecent.
The details of the case date back to the monitoring by the General Administration for the Protection of Morals of the activity of the content creator on social media, where security forces apprehended the accused within the jurisdiction of the Al-Nuzha police station in Cairo, and a mobile phone was found in her possession. Examination of the phone revealed materials related to the accusations, while she was attributed with admitting to publishing those clips with the aim of increasing viewership and generating financial profits.
After the investigations concluded, the case was referred to the economic court, which issued its initial ruling, before Habiba Reda submitted an appeal that ended with the ruling being upheld along with the suspension of the prison sentence for three years.
