In a security operation that shook the tourist ports of the Mediterranean, Cypriot authorities dealt a heavy blow to an international cross-border smuggling network, after apprehending an Israeli couple who were managing operations to bring in and distribute shipments of heavy drugs under the guise of "luxury tourist trips."
The secret operation that took place in the city of Limassol uncovered a highly complex criminal scheme that used luxurious yachts as a front for smuggling white poisons away from the eyes of inspection agencies in Cypriot ports and marinas.
Before the court in Limassol, Cypriot police investigators revealed the complex working method of the network, as the perpetrators deliberately concealed the shipments and cleverly disguised them as health supplies and construction materials, before relocating and storing them inside paint containers in furnished homes in the towns of Ypsonas and Motaghiaka.
The simultaneous raids on the residences of the Israeli suspects and other partners yielded shocking results:
- A cache of contraband: Seizure of more than 126 kilograms of ketamine hidden in paint cans, along with quantities of cocaine, mephedrone, and MDMA.
- A previous shipment: Investigative findings revealed that the network had successfully smuggled approximately 70 kilograms of cocaine through Limassol port just one week before the security operation was executed.
The investigations revealed that the scheme targeted not only the Cypriot market and Israeli residents on the island but also extended to securing drugs for summer partygoers in global entertainment islands, where estimates from the European Union's drug agency indicate that the seized shipment would have netted the gang over 10 million euros upon its arrival and promotion in the black market on the Greek island of "Mykonos."
Cypriot authorities also seized amounts of money in euros and Israeli shekels, drug weighing devices, and quantities of smuggled cigarettes, while the court decided to extend the detention of the suspects to continue tracing the international connections of this gang.
