Heavy rains and thunderstorms disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport in the Indian capital, Delhi, on Friday, after water flooded parts of the airport's surroundings, leading to the diversion of 9 flights to other airports.
Indian reports indicated that the nine flights were diverted between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM local time, including 4 flights to Jaipur, 4 to Lucknow, and 1 to Ahmedabad, due to adverse weather conditions and deteriorating operational circumstances at the airport.
The rains caused water to accumulate on the road leading to the airport and in the front plaza, while footage from the site showed water extending to areas surrounding the buildings, before the Delhi airport management announced the removal of the accumulated water and efforts to restore operations to normal.
The impact of the bad weather was not limited to the diverted flights, as more than 400 flights were delayed at Delhi Airport on the same day, according to data reported by Indian media, while airlines issued warnings to travelers and urged them to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
Palam Airport, near Indira Gandhi Airport, recorded 72.2 millimeters of rain over three hours between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM, which is the highest amount recorded in Delhi during that period, while wind speeds during a sudden storm reached 76 kilometers per hour, and visibility dropped to about 600 meters.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms in parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region, with expectations of continued weather disturbances through Saturday, before the intensity of the rains decreases starting Sunday.
These disruptions come at a time when Delhi faces significant challenges annually during the monsoon season, as heavy rains often lead to water accumulation and disrupt traffic and transportation, while harsh weather conditions add extra pressure on takeoff and landing operations, especially with reduced visibility and strong winds.
Indira Gandhi International Airport is the main air gateway to the Indian capital and one of the busiest airports in the country, so any disruption in its operations can quickly extend to the domestic and international flight network, causing widespread delays and diversions.
