A recent scientific study conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has shown that specific patterns of brain activity during deep sleep may help reduce the decline in cognitive abilities among individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, providing new insights into the relationship between sleep quality and disease progression.
The study revealed that good deep sleep may play an important role in alleviating the effects associated with elevated levels of the substance "orexin," a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating wakefulness and keeping the body in a state of alertness.
According to the research, excessive and persistent increases in "orexin" levels are linked to accelerated deterioration of brain cells in Alzheimer’s patients, while certain electrical patterns that appear in the brain during deep sleep act as "biological buffers" that limit these negative effects.
The study clarified that deep sleep, characterized by the presence of slow waves and oscillations, may function as a defensive mechanism that helps weaken the harmful impact of elevated "orexin" levels, even when they remain high.
