In one of the strangest historical settlements in the world, this country did not only engage in battles and shed blood to seize its freedom, but ultimately had to pay a financial ransom that shocked the entire continent.
This country is Brazil, for in 1825, Brazilians paid two million pounds sterling (equivalent at the time to about 80 tons of pure gold) to the Portuguese crown in exchange for the signing of a single document: the official recognition of the country's independence.
The story begins in 1807 when the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Portugal. Faced with this overwhelming danger, the Portuguese royal family fled across the Atlantic and settled in Rio de Janeiro, causing Brazil to suddenly transform from just a colony into the main seat of the empire.
However, the winds did not blow as Lisbon wished; after the threat of Napoleon had passed and the king returned to his homeland, his son, Prince "Pedro I," refused to obey the orders to return and chose to stand with the Brazilians, taking one of the boldest historical steps: he declared Brazil's independence and proclaimed himself its emperor.
After fierce battles and decisive British mediation, Portugal realized that its influence had ended forever, but it refused to concede for free. The negotiations resulted in a harsh historical treaty:
- Geographical concessions: Brazil relinquished its ambitions and commitments in the African colonies.
- The 80-ton bill: Brazil committed to paying two million pounds sterling as direct financial compensation to Portugal, thus buying its freedom with both gold and blood, and closing the chapter of colonialism forever.
