A recent study revealed a surprising effect of peppermint oil that may go beyond its traditional use in soothing or improving digestion, as the results showed a significant decrease in blood pressure among individuals with mild hypertension, opening a new avenue for this natural oil as a low-cost option in combating one of the most prevalent diseases of our time.
The study conducted by researchers at the University of Lancashire in the UK included 40 participants aged between 18 and 65 years, who were suffering from pre-hypertension or stage one hypertension. The participants were divided into two groups; the first received a small dose of peppermint oil twice daily for 20 days, while the second group received a placebo flavored with peppermint without the active ingredient.
During the trial period, the researchers focused on measuring systolic blood pressure (the top number in the reading) as an important indicator of cardiovascular health. The results showed that the group that consumed peppermint oil recorded an average decrease of 8.48 mmHg compared to the placebo group, which aligns with the average decrease of 8.5 mmHg noted by the researchers.
Peppermint contains natural compounds such as menthol and flavonoids, which are substances associated with potential effects on vasodilation and improved blood flow, prompting researchers to test it in individuals with slightly elevated blood pressure.
The study did not limit itself to systolic blood pressure; it also included other measurements such as diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, blood tests, mental health, and sleep quality, in an attempt to paint a comprehensive picture of the impact of peppermint oil on the body.
Dr. Johnny Sinclair, a professor of sports science and health, described the results as "extremely positive," noting that they have significant clinical implications, especially since hypertension is one of the largest preventable risk factors for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, and the leading single cause of mortality worldwide. He added that traditional medications for treating high blood pressure are effective, but they may cause unwanted side effects, and their long-term effectiveness is not always clear, making peppermint oil (low-cost and low-calorie) a simple option that could help millions of people around the world if further studies prove its efficacy.
Although the results are promising, the researchers emphasize that this study is preliminary and that larger and more diverse trials are needed before peppermint oil can be adopted as an official therapeutic option. However, what they have discovered opens the door to a low-cost natural solution that may change the way mild hypertension is managed.
