مددت السلطات الإيطالية إغلاق مطار «كاتانيا» في جزيرة صقلية حتى الساعة الثانية من فجر (الجمعة) 00:00 بتوقيت جرينتش؛ بسبب استمرار النشاط البركاني لجبل «إتنا» وتصاعد سحب الرماد الكثيفة؛ ما تسبب في اضطراب واسع بحركة الطيران وتأثر آلاف المسافرين خلال ذروة موسم العطلات الصيفية.
وأعلن مشغّل المطار تمديد الإغلاق بعدما كان مقررًا استمرار تعليق الرحلات حتى الساعة الرابعة من مساء اليوم، فيما لم تستبعد السلطات تمديد فترة الإغلاق مجددًا في حال استمرار النشاط البركاني والظروف المؤثرة على سلامة الملاحة الجوية.
وامتدت تداعيات ثوران «إتنا»، الذي يُعد أكثر البراكين نشاطًا في أوروبا، إلى مالطا الواقعة جنوب صقلية، حيث أُلغيت العديد من الرحلات الجوية نتيجة انتشار سحب الرماد البركاني.
وأوضح المعهد الوطني الإيطالي للجيوفيزياء وعلم البراكين أن «إتنا» يواصل منذ (الجمعة) الماضي قذف كميات كبيرة من الرماد وشظايا الصخور المتوهجة، إلى جانب تدفق الحمم البركانية من فتحتين تقعان على ارتفاعي 2360 و2750 مترًا.
The Italian authorities have extended the closure of Catania Airport on the island of Sicily until 2:00 AM (Friday) 00:00 GMT due to the ongoing volcanic activity of Mount Etna and the rising thick ash clouds, which have caused widespread disruption to air traffic and affected thousands of travelers during the peak of the summer holiday season.
The airport operator announced the extension of the closure after it was initially planned to suspend flights until 4:00 PM today, while authorities did not rule out further extending the closure period if the volcanic activity and conditions affecting air navigation safety persist.
The repercussions of the eruption of Etna, which is considered the most active volcano in Europe, have extended to Malta, located south of Sicily, where many flights have been canceled due to the spread of volcanic ash clouds.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology explained that Etna has been ejecting large amounts of ash and glowing rock fragments since last Friday, in addition to lava flows from two vents located at altitudes of 2360 and 2750 meters.
