فاز الطبيب الأمريكي من أصول مصرية عبدالرحمن السيد، بترشيح الحزب الديمقراطي لانتخابات مجلس الشيوخ عن ولاية ميشيغان، بعد تفوقه في الانتخابات التمهيدية، ليقترب من تحقيق إنجاز تاريخي قد يجعله أول مسلم يُنتخب لعضوية مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي، إذا حسمت الانتخابات العامة المقررة في نوفمبر القادم.
السيد (41 عامًا)، ولد في ولاية ميشيغان لعائلة مصرية مهاجرة، وتخرج في جامعة ميشيغان، ثم حصل على شهادة الطب من جامعة كولومبيا، والدكتوراه من جامعة أكسفورد، قبل أن يبرز مديرًا للصحة في مدينة ديترويت، ويخوض لاحقًا انتخابات حاكم الولاية.
ويطرح السيد برنامجًا سياسيًا ذا توجه تقدمي، يتضمن توسيع الرعاية الصحية، وخفض تكاليف المعيشة، وانتقاد الدعم العسكري الأمريكي لإسرائيل، إلى جانب دعمه الحقوق المتساوية للفلسطينيين والإسرائيليين. كما يحظى بدعم شخصيات بارزة في الجناح التقدمي للحزب الديمقراطي، مثل بيرني ساندرز، وإليزابيث وارن، وألكساندريا أوكاسيو - كورتيز.
ورغم انتخاب عدد من المسلمين لعضوية مجلس النواب الأمريكي، من بينهم كيث إليسون، وأندريه كارسون، وإلهان عمر، ورشيدة طليب، فإن مجلس الشيوخ لم يشهد حتى اليوم انتخاب أي عضو مسلم، ما يجعل فوز عبدالرحمن السيد في الانتخابات العامة حدثًا غير مسبوق في التاريخ السياسي الأمريكي.
American doctor of Egyptian descent Abdulrahman Al-Sayed has won the Democratic Party's nomination for the Senate elections in Michigan after his success in the primary elections, bringing him closer to achieving a historic milestone that could make him the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, if he wins the general elections scheduled for next November.
Al-Sayed (41 years old) was born in Michigan to an immigrant Egyptian family, graduated from the University of Michigan, then obtained his medical degree from Columbia University, and his doctorate from the University of Oxford, before rising to prominence as the health director in Detroit and later running for governor of the state.
Al-Sayed presents a progressive political program that includes expanding healthcare, reducing the cost of living, and criticizing U.S. military support for Israel, alongside his support for equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis. He also enjoys support from prominent figures in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Despite the election of several Muslims to the U.S. House of Representatives, including Keith Ellison, André Carson, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, the Senate has yet to see the election of any Muslim member, making Abdulrahman Al-Sayed's potential victory in the general elections an unprecedented event in American political history.
