Processed foods and ready meals have become an essential part of children's daily diet, and this shift is attributed to several factors, the most prominent of which are:
First: the widespread availability of these products and the ease of obtaining them.
Second: marketing campaigns that directly target children.
Third: the appealing taste of these foods, resulting from their high content of sugar, salt, and fats, makes them more tempting to children compared to natural foods.
The danger of processed foods lies in their multiple negative effects on children's health; they contain high calories and low nutritional value, and excessive consumption is associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance and metabolic disorders that pave the way for diabetes in the future.
The harms do not stop there; they may also lead to deficiencies in some vitamins and minerals essential for the child's proper growth and development, especially when they replace healthy balanced meals. Additionally, the high sugar content raises the risk of tooth decay, while the low fiber content contributes to recurring digestive problems.
According to many recent studies, there is a clear correlation between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and the rising rates of obesity among children, as well as an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.
The reliance on fast food and ready-made products has led to a decline in the consumption of healthy foods, and over time, this dietary behavior turns into a daily habit that is difficult to change in later stages of life.
Finally
The role of the family is to protect their children from these risks by making healthy food a part of the family's daily culture, ensuring the provision of balanced home-cooked meals, encouraging them to eat fruits and vegetables daily, and limiting sweetened beverages and processed snacks.
