Researchers from the North Caucasus Federal University of Russia have succeeded in developing a new image processing technology that allows for compression and restoration operations at unprecedented speeds, while maintaining image quality, in a step that could open up wide horizons for applications relying on real-time optical data processing.
The new technology relies on processing three or four pixels simultaneously and converting them into a binary representation made up of zeros and ones, instead of dealing with each pixel separately as is done in traditional methods, which significantly enhances performance efficiency.
Pavel Lyakhov, head of the Mathematical Modeling Department at the Chervyakov College of Mathematics and Computer Science and one of the study participants, explained that the image is first converted into binary code, then the data is divided into small parts that are sent over the network, before being reprocessed and assembled at the receiving device to reconstruct the image.
He pointed out that image quality was previously affected during this process, before the adoption of the "JPEG XS" standard in 2019, which contributed to improving the accuracy of the resulting images while maintaining transmission speed to a large extent, noting that the new algorithm differs from current techniques that process pixels sequentially, as it relies on the "Winograd" method to process groups containing two pixels and five pixels simultaneously, allowing operations to be executed in parallel instead of the traditional sequential manner.
