في واقعة صادمة امتزجت فيها المأساة بالاحتيال، كشفت محكمة بريطانية تفاصيل قضية لرجل احتفظ بجثمان والدته داخل مجمد في غرفة المعيشة لسنوات، مدعياً أنه لم يستطع تقبل رحيلها، بينما واصل في الوقت نفسه تحصيل مستحقاتها المالية التي تجاوزت 106 آلاف دولار.
وأصدرت محكمة بريطانية حكماً بالسجن لمدة عامين وأربعة أشهر بحق كريستوفر فيليبس (60 عاماً)، بعد إدانته بإخفاء جثمان والدته سيلفيا فيليبس (89 عاماً) داخل مجمد أفقي بمنزل العائلة في مدينة بورثكاول جنوب ويلز، إلى جانب ارتكابه جرائم احتيال مرتبطة باستمرار صرف مستحقاتها المالية بعد وفاتها.
وبحسب ما أوردته صحيفة «ديلي ميل»، ظل جثمان سيلفيا داخل المجمد منذ وفاتها في مارس 2023، حتى اكتشاف الواقعة في فبراير 2026، بعدما أثار طبيبها شكوكاً بشأن سلامتها وأبلغ الجهات المختصة.
وخلال جلسات المحاكمة، قال فيليبس، وهو مدير شركة سابق، إنه لم يتمكن من استيعاب وفاة والدته، مؤكداً أنه «لم يكن يريد أن يتركها ترحل»، ورغب في البقاء إلى جوارها لأطول فترة ممكنة.
من جانبها، أوضحت محاميته روث سميث أن موكلها كان يعيش حالة حزن عميقة، وأن تعلقه الشديد بوالدته دفعه إلى الاحتفاظ بجثمانها بالقرب منه، مشيرة إلى أنه كان يجلس بجوارها ويتحدث معها عن البرامج التلفزيونية كما اعتاد أن يفعل خلال حياتها.
ورغم هذه المبررات، أدانت المحكمة فيليبس بمنع دفن والدته بطريقة قانونية ولائقة، إضافة إلى تهمتَي الاحتيال لعدم إبلاغ وزارة العمل والمعاشات البريطانية ومجلس مقاطعة بريدجند بوفاتها.
وأظهرت التحقيقات أنه واصل خلال تلك الفترة تحصيل معاش الدولة والمساعدات الاجتماعية والبدلات المستحقة لوالدته، لتصل القيمة الإجمالية للمبالغ التي حصل عليها إلى نحو 106 آلاف دولار أمريكي.
وتشير تفاصيل القضية إلى أن فيليبس كان قد ترك عمله قبل وفاة والدته ليتولى رعايتها بشكل كامل، بعدما عاش معها قرابة 50 عاماً، وتولى مسؤولية رعايتها منذ 2008.
وأوضح أمام المحكمة أنه حمل والدته بين ذراعيه لحظة وفاتها وتعهد بالعناية بها، قبل أن يشتري بعد يومين مجمداً أفقياً ويضعه في غرفة المعيشة لإخفاء جثمانها.
وعندما داهمت الشرطة المنزل في فبراير 2026، زعم أن والدته تقيم مع أقارب في لندن، لكنه عجز عن تقديم أي معلومات بشأنهم أو تحديد مكان إقامتهم، قبل أن يلتزم الصمت أثناء التحقيقات.

A British court sentenced Christopher Phillips (60 years old) to two years and four months in prison after convicting him of concealing the body of his mother, Sylvia Phillips (89 years old), inside a chest freezer at the family home in Borthcawl, South Wales, as well as committing fraud related to the continued payment of her financial entitlements after her death.
According to the Daily Mail, Sylvia's body remained in the freezer from the time of her death in March 2023 until the discovery of the incident in February 2026, after her doctor raised suspicions about her well-being and reported it to the authorities.
During the trial sessions, Phillips, a former company director, stated that he could not come to terms with his mother's death, insisting that he "did not want to let her go" and wished to stay by her side for as long as possible.
For her part, his lawyer, Ruth Smith, explained that her client was in a state of deep mourning and that his strong attachment to his mother led him to keep her body close to him, noting that he would sit next to her and talk to her about television shows as he used to do during her life.
Despite these justifications, the court found Phillips guilty of preventing his mother from being buried in a legal and dignified manner, in addition to two counts of fraud for failing to inform the UK Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend County Council of her death.
Investigations revealed that during that period, he continued to collect his mother's state pension, social assistance, and benefits, with the total amount he received reaching approximately $106,000.
Case details indicate that Phillips had left his job before his mother's death to take full care of her, having lived with her for nearly 50 years, and took on the responsibility of her care since 2008.
He explained in court that he held his mother in his arms at the moment of her death and vowed to take care of her, before buying a chest freezer two days later and placing it in the living room to hide her body.
When the police raided the house in February 2026, he claimed that his mother was staying with relatives in London, but he failed to provide any information about them or specify their whereabouts, before remaining silent during the investigations.
