The death toll from the explosion and collapse of a coal mine complex in Balochistan, southwestern Pakistan, has risen to 34, in one of the deadliest mining incidents in the country in recent years, while rescue teams continue their search for workers still trapped deep within the mine.
The explosion occurred on Thursday inside a coal mine in the Suranj area, located about 40 kilometers from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, after a strong methane gas explosion caused parts of the mining complex to collapse, according to Pakistani officials. Officials reported that the explosion damaged two adjacent mines within the complex, leading to parts of the site being buried under rubble.
Methane Explosion Buries Workers Under Rubble
Rescue operations have revealed the extent of the disaster inside the mine, as teams work to reach workers trapped at depths of about 1,200 meters below the surface, amid extremely dangerous conditions due to the nature of the collapse and the difficulty of accessing the affected areas.
Officials stated that 36 workers were inside the section that collapsed at the time of the explosion, and rescue teams have managed to recover the bodies of dozens of victims, while efforts continue to reach the remaining trapped workers. Authorities confirmed that rescue operations will continue until all collapsed areas have been searched.
Officials suspect that the accumulation of methane gas was behind the explosion, which is one of the most dangerous hazards in underground coal mines, as its buildup can lead to a violent explosion when it reaches an ignition source.
Pakistan Faces a Recurring Tragedy
This incident is not the first of its kind in Balochistan, which frequently witnesses explosions and collapses within coal mines, amid ongoing criticism of weak safety measures and hazardous working conditions.
Local reports indicate that Balochistan recorded at least 53 mining accidents during the first ten months of 2025, resulting in around 100 deaths and more than 200 injuries, with actual figures likely being higher due to unreported incidents. Authorities also face criticism for the poor enforcement of occupational safety legislation despite the existence of laws and regulations governing the mining sector.
The coal mining industry is a major source of income for thousands of families in the region, which heavily relies on natural resources, but many small and private mines operate under difficult conditions and lack ventilation systems, gas monitoring, and other basic safety equipment. Specialized reports confirm that the risks of methane explosions, fires, and collapses pose a constant threat to workers in Pakistani mines.
Promises of Investigation and Compensation for Victims' Families
The Balochistan government has announced the opening of an investigation into the causes of the incident, with authorities pledging to review safety procedures in the mines, while the Minister of Mines and Mineral Development in the region, Shoaib Nosherwani, announced compensation for the families of the victims of 500,000 Pakistani Rupees for each death, equivalent to about 1,800 US dollars.
