The Financial Times reported that the record rise in coffee prices has led consumers to change their purchasing habits, as many have begun to prefer buying smaller quantities of coffee in exchange for higher quality products, with an increasing interest in whole coffee beans and home coffee machines.
Giuseppe Lavazza, the president of Lavazza, the Italian company and one of the largest coffee roasting companies in the world, confirmed that the shift towards using whole coffee beans represents "the most significant trend currently seen in the coffee sector," explaining that consumers are seeking to recreate the café experience at home by using machines capable of preparing various types of coffee such as cappuccino, flat white, and long coffee.
He added that the rise in prices has not diminished consumers' interest in coffee; rather, it has driven them to focus on quality, noting that many now prefer "to consume less but with better quality."
Strong Growth in Whole Bean Sales
Market data clearly reflects this shift, as sales of whole coffee beans in the UK rose by 20.3% in terms of sales volume during the 12 months ending in May, compared to a growth of only 2.8% for the home coffee market overall.
The value of whole bean sales also increased by 36.8%, while sales of coffee machines that brew from beans to cup jumped by 33.5% during the same period.
This trend is not limited to the British market, as whole bean sales recorded significant growth in several European markets, with an increase of 35% in France, 33% in Italy, and 31.2% in Germany.
Lavazza pointed out that in Germany, the largest coffee-consuming market in Europe, whole beans have surpassed traditional ground coffee in terms of market size.
Price Volatility Continues
This shift comes after years of disruptions in global coffee markets, where droughts, adverse weather conditions, and poor harvests in producing countries led to record prices for Arabica and Robusta coffee in 2025, forcing roasting companies to raise prices multiple times.
The rise in prices for both types has also reduced companies' ability to cut costs by substituting higher-priced Arabica with lower-cost Robusta, a strategy that companies previously employed.
Despite the decline in coffee futures prices from their record levels, Lavazza confirmed that markets remain highly volatile, and it is not yet time to lower retail prices.
He stated, "We do not believe that current conditions allow for price reductions, and the possibility of further price increases still exists."
Production Challenges
The company president explained that market stability requires two strong production seasons in both Brazil and Vietnam, the world's largest coffee producers, to compensate for the decline in global stocks.
He noted that unexpected rains have slowed the harvest season in Brazil, while risks of frost, the "El Niño" phenomenon, and other climate fluctuations continue to threaten global production.
He added that farmers are in a better financial position after years of rising prices, which gives them the ability to hold onto their crops and not sell them immediately, while roasting companies are cautiously managing their purchases in anticipation of clearer market trends.
Lavazza confirmed that the coffee market is experiencing a "radical transformation" in the supply and demand equation, considering that "volatility has become the permanent feature of this sector."
