لقي ثمانية أشخاص مقتلهم إثر تحطم قاذفة إستراتيجية أمريكية من طراز B-52 Stratofortress بعد وقت قصير من إقلاعها من قاعدة إدواردز الجوية في ولاية كاليفورنيا، خلال مهمة اختبارية روتينية، وفق ما أعلنت القوات الجوية الأمريكية.
وبحسب موقع abcnews، وقعت الحادثة صباح (الاثنين) عند الساعة 11:20 بالتوقيت المحلي، حيث سقطت الطائرة بعد لحظات من الإقلاع واشتعلت فيها النيران داخل محيط القاعدة الواقعة في صحراء موهافي، ما أدى إلى مقتل جميع من كانوا على متنها.
وقال العقيد جيمس هايز، نائب قائد الجناح الاختباري 412 في القاعدة، إن مراجعة تسجيلات الحادث أظهرت أن التحطم كان "غير قابل للنجاة"، واصفاً الواقعة بأنها "مأساة مروعة"، وأضاف خلال مؤتمر صحفي: "لقد فقدنا ثمانية أمريكيين عظماء".
وأوضح المسؤولون أن أفراد الطاقم كانوا مزيجاً من العسكريين والمدنيين العاملين لدى الحكومة الأمريكية ومتعاقدين حكوميين، فيما سيتم الإعلان عن أسمائهم بعد إبلاغ ذويهم رسمياً.
كما أكدت شركة بوينغ أن اثنين من ضحايا الحادث من موظفيها، مشيرة إلى أنها تقدم الدعم لعائلاتهم.
وأغلقت السلطات الجوية في القاعدة المطار العسكري مؤقتاً، مع تحويل الرحلات القادمة إلى وجهات أخرى وتعليق العمليات الجوية لحين استكمال الإجراءات الأولية والتحقيقات الفنية.
ولا تزال أسباب الحادثة مجهولة حتى الآن، فيما بدأت القوات الجوية الأمريكية تحقيقاً شاملاً قد يستغرق عدة أشهر لتحديد ملابساته.
وأشار مسؤولون إلى أن الطائرة كانت تشارك في برنامج اختباري يتعلق بتحديث أنظمة الرادار الخاصة بأسطول القاذفات الإستراتيجية.
وتعد قاذفة B-52 Stratofortress واحدة من أشهر الطائرات العسكرية في التاريخ الأمريكي، إذ دخلت الخدمة خلال خمسينيات القرن الماضي وما زالت تشكل ركناً أساسياً في القوة الجوية الإستراتيجية للولايات المتحدة.

Eight people were killed when a U.S. B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber crashed shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in California during a routine test mission, according to the U.S. Air Force.
According to abcnews, the incident occurred on Monday at 11:20 AM local time, when the aircraft fell shortly after takeoff and caught fire within the vicinity of the base located in the Mojave Desert, resulting in the deaths of all those on board.
Colonel James Hayes, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing at the base, stated that a review of the incident recordings showed that the crash was "unsurvivable," describing the event as a "terrible tragedy." He added during a press conference: "We have lost eight great Americans."
Officials clarified that the crew members were a mix of military personnel and civilians working for the U.S. government and government contractors, and their names will be announced after their families have been officially notified.
Boeing also confirmed that two of the crash victims were its employees, noting that it is providing support to their families.
The air authorities at the base temporarily closed the military airport, rerouting incoming flights to other destinations and suspending air operations until initial procedures and technical investigations are completed.
The causes of the incident remain unknown at this time, while the U.S. Air Force has launched a comprehensive investigation that may take several months to determine the circumstances.
Officials indicated that the aircraft was participating in a test program related to upgrading the radar systems of the strategic bomber fleet.
The B-52 Stratofortress is one of the most famous military aircraft in American history, having entered service in the 1950s and still forming a cornerstone of the U.S. strategic air power.
