تحولت ساعات قليلة من الأمطار العنيفة والمستمرة إلى مشاهد حبست الأنفاس، وبدت أقرب إلى أفلام الكوارث الهوليوودية في عدة مناطق شاسعة بالصين، بعدما اجتاحت فيضانات عارمة ومدمرة مدناً وبلدات كاملة، مخلفة وراءها عشرات القتلى والمفقودين، وأجبرت عشرات الآلاف على النزوح الجماعي وسط تحذيرات مرعبة من اتساع نطاق الكارثة.
كيف تحولت الشوارع إلى أنهار جارفة؟
وفي أكثر المشاهد صدمة وذهولاً، سجّلت إحدى البلدات التابعة لإقليم هونان هطول نحو 240 مليمترًا من الأمطار خلال ساعات معدودة فقط، وهو رقم مرعب وصفته وسائل إعلام صينية رسمية اليوم (الأربعاء) بأنه «تاريخي وغير مسبوق»، بعدما نجح في تحطيم كل السجلات الرقمية والمناخية السابقة في المنطقة.
ومع ارتفاع منسوب المياه بشكل جنوني وفوق طاقة الاستيعاب، اختفت معالم الحياة وتحولت الشوارع إلى أنهار جارفة تجتاح كل ما يقف في طريقها، بينما غمرت السيول الطوابق الأولى من المنازل واقتلعت طرقاً وجسوراً حيوية من جذورها، في وقت هرعت فيه فرق الإنقاذ مستخدمة القوارب المطاطية والمروحيات لإخراج آلاف العالقين من وسط الأحياء المنكوبة المعزولة.
وبحسب التلفزيون الرسمي الصيني، أسفرت الفيضانات في إقليم هونان وحده عن مقتل 5 أشخاص وفقدان 11 آخرين في حصيلة أولية مرشحة للارتفاع، فيما أُجبر أكثر من 19 ألف مواطن على الفرار ومغادرة منازلهم هرباً من السيول المتدفقة التي ابتلعت القرى والبلدات في لمح البصر.
ولم تتوقف أضرار الطقس عند حدود هونان، إذ شهد إقليم هوبي المجاور مشاهد فوضوية مروعة بعدما اختفت معالم الطرق تماماً تحت البرك المائية العملاقة، وانهارت عشرات المنازل القديمة وانقطعت شبكات الاتصالات والكهرباء عن مناطق واسعة، مع تسجيل قتلى ومفقودين جدد.
أما في إقليم قويتشو الواقع جنوب غربي البلاد، فقد تسببت الأمطار الطوفانية والانهيارات الأرضية الطينية الناتجة عنها في سقوط ضحايا آخرين وإجلاء آلاف السكان، فيما أكدت تقارير ميدانية أن هناك مناطق عُزلت تماماً عن العالم الخارجي بعد تدمير وشلل شبكة الطرق المؤدية إليها.
وتأتي هذه الكارثة الإنسانية والبيئية الجديدة في وقت تواجه فيه الصين موجات طقس متطرفة ومتلاحقة، حيث باتت الفيضانات المدمرة والأمطار القياسية تضرب المدن الكبرى بصورة متزايدة وبلا سابق إنذار، مما يجدد المخاوف الدولية الهائلة من التأثيرات المدمرة للتغير المناخي على البلاد الأكثر سكاناً في العالم، ويطرح التساؤل المرعب: هل أصبحت البنية التحتية العالمية عاجزة تماماً أمام غضب الطبيعة؟
A few hours of intense and continuous rain turned into breath-taking scenes, resembling Hollywood disaster movies in several vast areas of China, as devastating floods swept through entire cities and towns, leaving behind dozens of dead and missing, and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate amid terrifying warnings of the disaster's expansion.
How did the streets turn into raging rivers?
In one of the most shocking and astonishing scenes, a town in Hunan Province recorded nearly 240 millimeters of rain in just a few hours, a terrifying figure described by official Chinese media today (Wednesday) as "historic and unprecedented," having shattered all previous digital and climatic records in the region.
As water levels rose uncontrollably and exceeded capacity, signs of life disappeared, and the streets transformed into raging rivers sweeping away everything in their path, while floodwaters inundated the ground floors of homes, uprooting vital roads and bridges. Rescue teams rushed in using inflatable boats and helicopters to extract thousands stranded in the isolated disaster-stricken neighborhoods.
According to Chinese state television, the floods in Hunan Province alone resulted in the deaths of 5 people and the disappearance of 11 others in an initial toll that is likely to rise, while more than 19,000 citizens were forced to flee and leave their homes to escape the rushing waters that swallowed villages and towns in the blink of an eye.
The weather-related damages did not stop at Hunan, as the neighboring Hubei Province witnessed horrific chaotic scenes after the roadways completely disappeared beneath giant water pools, dozens of old houses collapsed, and communication and electricity networks were cut off from vast areas, with new casualties and missing persons reported.
In Guizhou Province, located in the southwest of the country, torrential rains and resulting mudslides caused additional casualties and the evacuation of thousands of residents, while field reports confirmed that some areas were completely isolated from the outside world after the destruction and paralysis of the road networks leading to them.
This new humanitarian and environmental disaster comes at a time when China is facing extreme and successive weather patterns, as devastating floods and record rainfall increasingly strike major cities without warning, renewing immense international concerns about the destructive impacts of climate change on the world's most populous country, and raising the terrifying question: Has global infrastructure become completely powerless against the wrath of nature?
