وصل 4 بريطانيين إلى ألبانيا ونزلوا في فندق فاخر تعود ملكيته لرجل الأعمال أرديان نيكولاج، إذ تعمدوا التظاهر بأنهم سياح عاديون، فتبادلوا الأحاديث الودية مع زوجة الضحية، وتناولوا الوجبات المجانية على موائد الرجل الذي كانوا يراقبون تحركاته بدقة تمهيداً لاغتياله.
وبعد أيام قليلة، دخل رجل يرتدي زي عامل توصيل إلى مطعم الفندق وأفرغ ست رصاصات من مسدس سوفيتي في جسد نيكولاج في أبريل 2023، ليفر بعدها القاتل روبن سارايفا «وهو مقيم بريطاني» إلى المغرب قبل أن يُعتقل ويحكم عليه بالسجن المؤبد.
لكن الكارثة لم تتوقف عند هذا الحد، فقد كشفت التحقيقات أن سارايفا لم يكن يعمل منفرداً، بل كان مدعوماً من فريق لوجستي بريطاني شمل هارييت بريدجمان، وستيفن هانت، وتوماس ميثان، وهاري سيمبسون، الذين تولوا مهمة المراقبة، وجميعهم كانوا يعملون تحت إمرة العقل المدبر إدموند هاكسيا، في جريمة تعود جذورها إلى ثأر دموي ممتد منذ عام 1997.
وبينما وافقت السلطات البريطانية على تسليم المتهمين لألبانيا لمواجهة العدالة، تسببت «ورقة قانونية» في قلب الموازين، إذ قامت السلطات الألبانية بتعديل وصف التهم من حيازة أسلحة وقتل إلى قتل عمد مع سبق الإصرار، مما جعل طلب التسليم الذي وقعه وزير الداخلية البريطاني غير صالح إجرائياً، وهو ما استغله المحامون لإسقاط جميع أوامر التسليم أمام محكمة الاستئناف.
واليوم، يعيش القتلة الخمسة أحراراً على الأراضي البريطانية، في انتظار قرار المحكمة العليا، بينما تحاول ألبانيا الطعن في القرار، في قضية تجسد صراعاً مريراً بين متطلبات العدالة الجنائية وتعقيدات الثغرات القانونية.
Four Britons arrived in Albania and checked into a luxury hotel owned by businessman Ardian Nikolaj, where they deliberately pretended to be ordinary tourists, engaging in friendly conversations with the victim's wife and enjoying free meals at the tables of the man they were closely monitoring in preparation for his assassination.
A few days later, a man dressed as a delivery worker entered the hotel restaurant and fired six bullets from a Soviet pistol into Nikolaj's body in April 2023, before the killer, Ruben Sarajva, a British resident, fled to Morocco where he was later arrested and sentenced to life in prison.
However, the disaster did not stop there, as investigations revealed that Sarajva was not acting alone, but was supported by a British logistical team that included Harriet Bridgman, Stephen Hunt, Thomas Methan, and Harry Simpson, who were responsible for the surveillance, all working under the mastermind Edmund Haxhia, in a crime rooted in a blood feud dating back to 1997.
While British authorities agreed to extradite the suspects to Albania to face justice, a "legal document" turned the scales, as Albanian authorities amended the charges from possession of weapons and murder to premeditated murder, rendering the extradition request signed by the British Home Secretary procedurally invalid, which lawyers exploited to dismiss all extradition orders before the Court of Appeal.
Today, the five killers live freely on British soil, awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court, while Albania attempts to challenge the ruling, in a case that embodies a bitter struggle between the demands of criminal justice and the complexities of legal loopholes.
