في مشهد مأساوي خلال مناسبة سنوية، تحوّل تجمع حاشد في أحد أبرز المواقع التاريخية في هايتي إلى كارثة إنسانية، بعدما أدى تدافع عند المدخل إلى سقوط عشرات الضحايا، وسط مخاوف من ارتفاع الحصيلة.
وأعلنت السلطات أن ما لا يقل عن 30 شخصاً لقوا حتفهم في حادث التدافع الذي وقع في منطقة ريفية شمال البلاد، وفق ما أكده رئيس الحماية المدنية في الإقليم الشمالي جان هنري بيتي.
وأوضح بيتي أن الحادث وقع في قلعة لافيرير، وهي حصن تاريخي يعود إلى أوائل القرن الـ19، شُيّد عقب استقلال هايتي عن فرنسا، ويُعد من أبرز المعالم السياحية في البلاد.
وأشار إلى أن الموقع كان يشهد، يوم السبت، ازدحاماً كبيراً من الطلاب والزوار الذين توافدوا للمشاركة في الاحتفال السنوي، في هذا الموقع المدرج ضمن قائمة منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة (يونسكو) للتراث العالمي.
وفي بيان رسمي، أعرب رئيس الوزراء أليكس ديدييه فيلس إيمي عن تعازيه لأسر الضحايا، مؤكداً تضامن الحكومة مع المصابين وعائلاتهم في هذا الظرف الصعب، مشيراً إلى أن عدداً كبيراً من الحاضرين كانوا من فئة الشباب، دون الكشف عن حصيلة رسمية نهائية للضحايا.
وبيّن رئيس الحماية المدنية أن التدافع وقع عند مدخل الموقع، لافتاً إلى أن هطول الأمطار ساهم في تفاقم الوضع وزيادة صعوبة السيطرة على الحشود.
وتأتي هذه الحادثة في سياق سلسلة من الكوارث التي شهدتها هايتي خلال السنوات الأخيرة، من بينها انفجار خزان وقود في 2024 أسفر عن مقتل 24 شخصاً، وآخر في 2021 أودى بحياة 90 شخصاً، إضافة إلى زلزال مدمر في العام نفسه خلّف نحو ألفَي قتيل.
In a tragic scene during an annual event, a large gathering at one of Haiti's most prominent historical sites turned into a humanitarian disaster, as a stampede at the entrance led to dozens of casualties, amid fears of a rising toll.
Authorities announced that at least 30 people lost their lives in the stampede that occurred in a rural area in the north of the country, as confirmed by Jean Henry Céant, the head of civil protection in the northern region.
Céant explained that the incident took place at the La Ferrière fortress, a historic stronghold dating back to the early 19th century, built after Haiti's independence from France, and considered one of the country's major tourist attractions.
He noted that the site was experiencing a large crowd of students and visitors on Saturday who had gathered to participate in the annual celebration at this site, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
In an official statement, Prime Minister Alex Didier Félix Émile expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, affirming the government's solidarity with the injured and their families during this difficult time, noting that a large number of attendees were young people, without disclosing a final official toll of the victims.
The head of civil protection indicated that the stampede occurred at the entrance of the site, pointing out that the rainfall contributed to worsening the situation and made it more difficult to control the crowds.
This incident comes in the context of a series of disasters that Haiti has witnessed in recent years, including a fuel tank explosion in 2024 that resulted in 24 deaths, another in 2021 that claimed 90 lives, in addition to a devastating earthquake in the same year that left around two thousand dead.
