ضربت أمطار غزيرة ورياح عاتية، اليوم، أجزاء واسعة من الجزيرة الشمالية في نيوزيلندا، متسببة في شلل ملحوظ بحركة النقل وإغلاق عدد من الطرق الحيوية، إلى جانب انقطاع التيار الكهربائي عن عشرات الآلاف من السكان، وتأجيل معظم الرحلات الجوية من وإلى العاصمة ويلنجتون.
وذكرت وسائل إعلام محلية أن شركة طيران نيوزيلندا علّقت عملياتها في مطارات ويلنجتون ونابيير وبالمرستون نورث، في ظل الظروف الجوية القاسية التي أعاقت حركة الطيران.
وأكدت السلطات أن أكثر من 30 ألف عقار تضرروا بانقطاع الكهرباء، من بينهم نحو 10 آلاف مشترك في مناطق متفرقة من الجزيرة، فيما تتواصل جهود فرق الطوارئ للتعامل مع الأضرار الواسعة التي خلفتها العاصفة.
ودعت الجهات المعنية السائقين إلى تجنب التنقل غير الضروري، بينما أغلقت عدة مدارس أبوابها احترازياً. ومن المتوقع أن تتجه العاصفة نحو الجزيرة الجنوبية غداً الثلاثاء، وسط تحذيرات رسمية من استمرار الاضطرابات وتصاعد تأثيرات الطقس السيئ.
Heavy rain and strong winds struck large parts of New Zealand's North Island today, causing significant disruption to transportation and the closure of several vital roads, along with power outages affecting tens of thousands of residents, and the postponement of most flights to and from the capital, Wellington.
Local media reported that Air New Zealand suspended operations at Wellington, Napier, and Palmerston North airports due to the severe weather conditions that hindered air travel.
Authorities confirmed that over 30,000 properties were affected by power outages, including about 10,000 customers in various areas of the island, while emergency teams continue efforts to address the extensive damage caused by the storm.
Relevant authorities urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, while several schools closed their doors as a precaution. The storm is expected to move towards the South Island tomorrow, Tuesday, amid official warnings of continued disruptions and worsening weather conditions.
