لقي 18 شخصاً على الأقل مصرعهم، اليوم (الخميس)، جراء انفجار وقع في منجم غير شرعي للفحم في ولاية ميغالايا بشمال شرق الهند.
وأعلن رئيس الحكومة المحلية في ميغالايا كونراد سانغما إجراء تحقيق معمق في الحادثة لتحديد المسؤوليات.
وقام عناصر الإسعاف بتفتيش المنجم الواقع في منطقة إيست جاينتيا هيلز بحثاً عن عمال آخرين قد يكونون عالقين في الداخل.
وغالباً ما تكون المناجم غير الشرعية عبارة عن مواقع محفورة في باطن الأرض بشكل عمودي، خصوصاً على أطراف تلال تتفرع إلى أنفاق ضيقة بغية الوصول إلى الفحم والمعادن لاستخراجها.
وكانت محكمة فيدرالية حظرت استغلال هذا النوع من المناجم في ميغالايا سنة 2014، بعدما اشتكت مجتمعات محلية من أنها تلوث مصادر المياه وتشكل خطراً على البشر، غير أن هذه الأنشطة ما زالت منتشرة على نطاق واسع في ولاية ميغالايا.
At least 18 people were killed today (Thursday) due to an explosion that occurred in an illegal coal mine in the state of Meghalaya in northeastern India.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, announced a thorough investigation into the incident to determine accountability.
Rescue workers searched the mine located in the East Jaintia Hills area for other workers who may be trapped inside.
Illegal mines are often vertical shafts dug into the ground, especially at the edges of hills, branching into narrow tunnels to access coal and minerals for extraction.
A federal court banned the exploitation of this type of mine in Meghalaya in 2014, after local communities complained that they polluted water sources and posed a danger to humans, yet these activities remain widespread in the state of Meghalaya.
