أثار الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب الجدل خلال جلسة نقاش حول الرعاية الصحية في البيت الأبيض، بعد أن كشف فشل تجربة صديقه الملياردير مع دواء «أوزمبيك» لإنقاص الوزن، التي لم تؤتِ ثمارها رغم إنفاقه آلاف الدولارات شهريًا.
وقال ترمب (79 عامًا) إن صديقه «ذكي جدًا، وثري جدًا، وقوي فعلًا لكنه بدين جدًا»، مشيرًا إلى أن الدواء الذي كان يتناوله في نيويورك يكلفه 1300 دولار شهريًا، بينما يكلفه 87 دولارًا فقط في لندن، دون أن يحدث أي تأثير ملموس على وزنه.
وأضاف ترمب أنه أخبر صديقه بصراحة أن الدواء «لا يعمل معه»، مشيرًا إلى أنه رآه في لندن وكان «أسمن من أي وقت مضى»، لكنه أقر بأن «أوزمبيك» يعمل مع كثير من الناس. وردّ الصديق بسخرية: «شكرًا، تجعلني أشعر بتحسن»، فيما شدد ترمب على أنه يفضل قول الحقيقة دائمًا.
واستغل الرئيس الأمريكي هذه الواقعة لتوضيح جهود إدارته في خفض أسعار الأدوية الموصوفة، مؤكدًا أن الولايات المتحدة ستطابق أدنى سعر موجود في أي دولة حول العالم، وأشار ترمب إلى أن إدارته أعلنت في نوفمبر الماضي خفض سعر أوزمبيك من 1350 دولارًا شهريًا ليصبح 350 دولارًا عبر برنامج TrumpRx.
واعتبر ترمب هذه الخطوة دليلًا على التزام إدارته بجعل الرعاية الصحية ميسورة التكلفة، بعد سنوات من الوعود السياسية التي لم تُنفذ سابقًا.
U.S. President Donald Trump sparked controversy during a discussion session on healthcare at the White House after revealing the failure of his billionaire friend's experience with the weight-loss drug "Ozempic," which did not yield results despite him spending thousands of dollars monthly.
Trump (79 years old) said that his friend is "very smart, very wealthy, and really powerful, but he is very overweight," noting that the medication he was taking in New York costs him $1,300 a month, while it only costs $87 in London, without having any noticeable effect on his weight.
Trump added that he told his friend candidly that the drug "doesn't work for him," pointing out that he saw him in London and he was "heavier than ever," but he acknowledged that "Ozempic" works for many people. The friend sarcastically replied, "Thanks, you make me feel better," while Trump emphasized that he prefers to always tell the truth.
The U.S. President took advantage of this incident to clarify his administration's efforts to lower prescription drug prices, asserting that the United States will match the lowest price available in any country around the world. Trump noted that his administration announced last November a reduction in the price of Ozempic from $1,350 a month to $350 through the TrumpRx program.
Trump considered this step as evidence of his administration's commitment to making healthcare affordable, after years of political promises that had not been fulfilled previously.
