أسهم رجل مشرّد يُعرف بالاسم المستعار «جون» في تحقيق اختراق حاسم أدّى إلى تعقّب كلاوديو نيفِش فالينتي، منفّذ الهجوم المسلّح في جامعة براون بولاية رود آيلاند، الذي ارتكب لاحقاً جريمة قتل بحق أستاذ في معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا (MIT). ومع انكشاف دوره، تتصاعد الدعوات في الولايات المتحدة لمنحه مكافأة قدرها 50 ألف دولار كانت قد خُصصت لمن يقدّم معلومات تقود إلى القبض على الجاني.
وبحسب التقارير، لعب «جون» دوراً محورياً في التحقيق بعدما تعرّف على المشتبه به من صور نشرتها الشرطة، وقدم معلومات دقيقة عن سيارة كان يستخدمها، ما مكّن السلطات من تتبّع تحركاته عبر شبكة واسعة من كاميرات المراقبة.
وأشاد عمدة مدينة بروفيدنس بدور الرجل المشرّد، واصفاً إياه بـ«البطل»، ودعا رسمياً إلى منحه المكافأة تقديراً لمبادرته ومسؤوليته تجاه المجتمع، في وقت أُفيد بأن مواطنين عرضوا استضافته خلال عطلة الأعياد.
وكان الهجوم في جامعة براون قد وقع السبت قبل أكثر من أسبوع، حين فتح فالينتي النار داخل قاعة محاضرات في مبنى الهندسة والفيزياء، ما أسفر عن مقتل طالبين وإصابة تسعة آخرين. وبعد يومين، قُتل في منزله بولاية ماساتشوستس البروفيسور نونو لورييرو، أستاذ الفيزياء البارز في MIT.
لاحقاً أكدت السلطات أن الجريمتين نفذهما الشخص نفسه، قبل أن يُعثر على فالينتي ميتاً في مستودع بولاية نيوهامشير، وتبيّن أنه أنهى حياته بنفسه. وكشفت التحقيقات أنه كان طالباً سابقاً في جامعة براون، كما درس في التسعينات مع لورييرو في البرتغال.

As his role became known, calls in the United States intensified to grant him a reward of $50,000 that had been designated for anyone providing information leading to the capture of the perpetrator.
According to reports, "John" played a pivotal role in the investigation after recognizing the suspect from photos released by the police and providing accurate information about a car he was using, which enabled authorities to track his movements through a vast network of surveillance cameras.
The mayor of Providence praised the homeless man's role, describing him as a "hero," and officially called for him to be awarded the reward in recognition of his initiative and responsibility towards the community, at a time when it was reported that citizens offered to host him during the holiday season.
The attack at Brown University occurred on Saturday over a week ago when Valenti opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering and physics building, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. Two days later, Professor Nuno Louriero, a prominent physics professor at MIT, was killed in his home in Massachusetts.
Authorities later confirmed that the two crimes were committed by the same person, before Valenti was found dead in a shed in New Hampshire, having taken his own life. Investigations revealed that he was a former student at Brown University and had studied in the 1990s with Louriero in Portugal.
