أصدرت محكمة ولاية جورجيا الأمريكية حكماً بالإعدام المدني بحق صوفيا ويليامز (43 عامًا) ويعني السجن المؤبد دون إمكانية الإفراج المشروط، بعد إدانتها بقتل طفلها البالغ من العمر أربع سنوات، في واحدة من أكثر القضايا مأساوية التي شهدتها الولاية. وأضافت المحكمة عقوبة إضافية بالسجن عشر سنوات، بعد أربعة أشهر من إدانة ويليامز بجرائم القتل العمد والجنائي، إلى جانب تهم الاعتداء على الأطفال.
وتعود تفاصيل القضية إلى مارس 2022، حين عُثر على الطفل فاقدًا للوعي في شقة العائلة، وتم نقله إلى مستشفى في أتلانتا، حيث أُعلنت وفاته لاحقًا. وخلال التحقيقات، اعترفت الأم بأنها كانت تعاقب ابنها باستخدام يدها، أو حذاء المنزل، أو حزام حقيبة يد، أو سلك شحن، بسبب أخطائه بعد تدريبه على استخدام المرحاض، وفق ما نقلته إفادات الأم وشهود داخل المنزل.
وأوضح تقرير الطب الشرعي أن الوفاة نتجت عن إصابة قوية في الرأس، وأن الطفل كان يمكن إنقاذه لو تلقى الرعاية الطبية في الوقت المناسب. كما أشار المدعي العام إلى أن الأم لم تطلب المساعدة الطبية فورًا، واكتفت بالبحث عبر هاتفها عن معلومات حول الإصابات، ما يعكس إهمالًا شديدًا أدى إلى وفاة طفل صغير.
وأكد مكتب المدعي العام أن الحكم يمثل «إنهاءً لإحدى القضايا المؤلمة التي شهدت إهمالًا بالغًا أودى بحياة طفل دون الرابعة»، مشددًا على أن العدالة تحققت بعد مأساة عائلية صادمة.

The court also added an additional ten-year prison sentence, following four months after Williams was convicted of first-degree and felony murder, along with child abuse charges.
The details of the case date back to March 2022, when the child was found unconscious in the family apartment and was taken to a hospital in Atlanta, where he was later pronounced dead. During the investigations, the mother admitted that she had been punishing her son using her hand, a house shoe, a handbag strap, or a charging cable, due to his mistakes after training him to use the toilet, according to statements from the mother and witnesses inside the home.
The forensic report clarified that the death resulted from a severe head injury and that the child could have been saved if he had received medical care in a timely manner. The prosecutor also noted that the mother did not seek medical help immediately and instead searched on her phone for information about the injuries, reflecting a severe neglect that led to the death of a young child.
The prosecutor's office confirmed that the ruling represents "the conclusion of one of the painful cases that witnessed extreme neglect that cost the life of a child under four," emphasizing that justice has been served after a shocking family tragedy.
