في واحدة من أكثر القضايا إثارة في بريطانيا، كشفت الشرطة شبكة إجرامية ضخمة كان يديرها غريغوري بيل (43 عاماً)، الذي حوّل أرباح تجارة المخدرات إلى حياة رفاهية فارهة حتى إنه كان يسدد مصاريف مدرسة ابنته الخاصة بأظرف نقدية يتركها عند موظفة الاستقبال، دون أن تشك المدرسة في مصدر الأموال.
وكشفت التحقيقات أن بيل لم يكن تاجراً عادياً، بل العقل المدبر لشبكة تهريب مخدرات على مستوى المملكة المتحدة، امتلك من خلالها 34 عقاراً في شرق مانشستر، إضافة إلى فيلتين في إسبانيا. وكان يعيش حياة فاخرة في شقة إيجارها الشهري 2,200 جنيه إسترليني بمنطقة راقية في شيشاير.
ووفقاً للنيابة، استخدم المتهم هواتف مشفرة من نوع EncroChat بأسماء سرية مثل Castlesnail وWonkyfrog، لإدارة صفقاته الضخمة وتوزيع كميات هائلة من أنواع مختلفة من المخدرات تشمل: الكوكايين، والهيروين، والإكستاسي، والكيتامين، والأمفيتامين، والحشيش إلى عصابات وموردين في مختلف أنحاء المملكة المتحدة. كما استعمل منازل آمنة في «ألدرلي إيدج» و«بيري» لتخزين المخدرات قبل توزيعها بواسطة سيارات مزودة بمخابئ سرية.
ولم تكن ثروته محدودة بالعقارات فحسب، فقد عثرت الشرطة في منزله على ملابس فاخرة تزيد قيمتها على 70 ألف جنيه إسترليني، بينما كشفت السجلات هوسه بالمقامرة وإنفاقه أكثر من 2 مليون جنيه في رهانات مع شركات شهيرة مثل Ladbrokes وBetfred.
وفي نهاية المحاكمة، أصدرت محكمة مانشستر كراون حكماً بالسجن لمدة 18 عاماً و9 أشهر على بيل، فيما حكم على مساعده إيان أوجدن بالسجن 16 عاماً و8 أشهر، وعلى أحد عملائه الرئيسيين بول براون بالسجن 10 أعوام.
ووصفت الشرطة البريطانية العملية بأنها «إدارة إجرامية بمستوى شركات كبرى»، وأكدت أن حجم الشبكة وأرباحها يوضح مدى خطورة تجارة المخدرات على المجتمع.
In one of the most exciting cases in Britain, the police uncovered a massive criminal network run by Gregory Bell (43), who turned the profits from drug trafficking into a lavish lifestyle, even paying his daughter's private school fees in cash envelopes left at the reception desk, without the school suspecting the source of the funds.
Investigations revealed that Bell was not an ordinary dealer, but the mastermind behind a drug smuggling network operating across the United Kingdom, through which he owned 34 properties in East Manchester, in addition to two villas in Spain. He lived a luxurious life in an apartment with a monthly rent of £2,200 in an upscale area of Cheshire.
According to the prosecution, the defendant used encrypted phones of the EncroChat type under secret names like Castlesnail and Wonkyfrog, to manage his massive deals and distribute huge quantities of various types of drugs including: cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, ketamine, amphetamines, and cannabis to gangs and suppliers across the UK. He also used safe houses in "Alderley Edge" and "Bury" to store the drugs before distributing them via vehicles equipped with secret compartments.
His wealth was not limited to real estate alone; the police found luxury clothing in his home worth over £70,000, while records revealed his obsession with gambling, having spent more than £2 million on bets with well-known companies like Ladbrokes and Betfred.
At the end of the trial, Manchester Crown Court sentenced Bell to 18 years and 9 months in prison, while his accomplice Ian Ogden received a sentence of 16 years and 8 months, and one of his main clients, Paul Brown, was sentenced to 10 years.
The British police described the operation as "a criminal enterprise on the level of major corporations," emphasizing that the scale of the network and its profits illustrate the serious threat of drug trafficking to society.
