This morning (Tuesday), the town of Castel D'Azzano near Verona, Italy, witnessed a horrific explosion that claimed the lives of three officers from the semi-military Carabinieri force and injured up to 13 other police officers with varying degrees of wounds during an evacuation operation of a family from a farm.

Deadly Ambush with Gas Canisters

According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the officers were about to storm the house when they smelled a strong gas odor, before the explosion shook the area moments later, resulting in casualties and the destruction of a large part of the property. Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosive device was part of a planned ambush.

3 Siblings Behind the Massacre

The family facing eviction consists of three siblings, one of whom has been arrested, while the other is still at large. The sister, who is in her sixties, was injured. Authorities confirm that the siblings had previously threatened to blow themselves up if the authorities decided to carry out the eviction.

Names of the Deceased

The Italian authorities announced the identification of the deceased officers as: Marco Bivari, Davide Bernardello, and Valerio Dabra, with ranks ranging from lieutenant to colonel. The authorities praised their sacrifices, affirming that what happened is "an indescribable national loss."

Angry Reactions

Defense Minister Guido Crosetto described the incident as a "massacre," emphasizing that the officers gave their lives in the line of duty, while the Ministry of the Interior pledged to pursue the fugitive and bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.
