وخلال مقابلة نادرة عبر الإنترنت عبر الأقمار الصناعية مع صحيفة نيويورك تايمز، تحدث الدكتور سيليك عن نقص الأدوية والمآسي اليومية، بما في ذلك وفاة امرأة حامل نزفت بسبب عدم توفر العلاج. ورغم الظروف القاسية، أظهر لحظة إنسانية حين ابتسم وشارك طعامه البسيط، وهو عبارة عن عصيدة تُستخدم عادةً كعلف للحيوانات، مما يعكس حجم المعاناة.
هجوم صاروخي
بعد أيام من شهادته، فارق الحياة الدكتور سيليك في هجوم صاروخي استهدف مسجدًا خلال صلاة الفجر، راح ضحيته نحو 75 شخصًا، ويُعتقد أن الهجوم نفذ بواسطة طائرة مسيرة.
يأتي هذا الحصار في ظل تصاعد العنف والصراع المسلح في السودان، الذي خلف مئات الآلاف من القتلى والمشردين. وتستمر المحاولات الدولية لتوصيل المساعدات الإنسانية إلى المنطقة، وسط مخاوف من تفاقم الأوضاع الإنسانية.
In the besieged city of El Fasher in the Darfur region of Sudan, a health worker, Dr. Omar Selik, documented the horrific humanitarian suffering experienced by the residents amid the siege by the Rapid Support Forces since April 2024.
During a rare online interview via satellite with The New York Times, Dr. Selik spoke about the shortage of medicines and the daily tragedies, including the death of a pregnant woman who bled due to the lack of treatment. Despite the harsh conditions, he showed a moment of humanity when he smiled and shared his simple food, which was a porridge typically used as animal feed, reflecting the extent of the suffering.
Missile Attack
Days after his testimony, Dr. Selik lost his life in a missile attack that targeted a mosque during the dawn prayer, resulting in the deaths of around 75 people, believed to have been carried out by a drone.
This siege comes amid escalating violence and armed conflict in Sudan, which has left hundreds of thousands dead and displaced. International efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the region continue, amid fears of worsening humanitarian conditions.
