في اكتشاف علمي جديد يعيد كتابة جزء من تاريخ الحياة على الأرض، أعلن علماء الحفريات العثور على بقايا تمساح ضخم عاش قبل ملايين السنين وكان يتغذى على الديناصورات.
وحش طباشيري
وكشف الباحثون نوعا مفترسا أطلقوا عليه اسم Kostensuchus atrox، عُثر عليه محفوظًا بشكل شبه كامل في تكوين كوريلو بالأرجنتين. هذا الكائن العملاق بلغ طوله 3.5 متر ووزنه أكثر من 250 كيلوجرامًا، ويعود إلى فصيلة «البيروصورات» المنقرضة، التي كانت تمشي على أطرافها مثل تنانين الكومودو بدلًا من الزحف كسائر التماسيح.
قوة هائلة
امتلك هذا التمساح أسنانا مسننة بطول بوصتين وفكًا عريضًا مدعومًا بعضلات قوية تمكنه من سحق فريسته بسهولة، ليصبح أشبه بـ«أسد العصر الطباشيري». وغذاؤه كان يعتمد بنسبة 70% على اللحوم، خصوصًا الديناصورات العاشبة التي كانت تعيش في بيئته الغنية بالنباتات.
موطن غير متوقع
هذا الاكتشاف شكّل مفاجأة، إذ لم يكن يُعتقد أن هذه الكائنات عاشت في أقصى جنوب أمريكا الجنوبية. فالبيئة حينها كانت معتدلة وخضراء، على عكس برودة الرياح القطبية التي تغطيها اليوم.
سبب الانقراض
ويذهب العلماء إلى أن اعتماد التمساح المفرط على اللحوم جعله هشًا أمام الكارثة الكونية؛ فعقب سقوط الكويكب الشهير ونفاد فرائسه، فشلت هذه الفصيلة في التكيّف على عكس كائنات أخرى استطاعت العيش بالقرب من المياه العذبة أو الاعتماد جزئيًا على النباتات.
In a new scientific discovery that rewrites part of the history of life on Earth, paleontologists have announced the finding of the remains of a massive crocodile that lived millions of years ago and fed on dinosaurs.
Cretaceous Monster
The researchers revealed a predatory species they named Kostensuchus atrox, which was found almost completely preserved in the Coriello Formation in Argentina. This giant creature measured 3.5 meters in length and weighed over 250 kilograms, belonging to the extinct group of "pterosaur" relatives, which walked on their limbs like Komodo dragons instead of crawling like other crocodiles.
Enormous Power
This crocodile possessed serrated teeth two inches long and a broad jaw supported by strong muscles that enabled it to crush its prey with ease, making it akin to the "lion of the Cretaceous period." Its diet consisted of 70% meat, particularly herbivorous dinosaurs that lived in its plant-rich environment.
Unexpected Habitat
This discovery came as a surprise, as it was not believed that these creatures lived in the far south of South America. The environment at that time was temperate and green, unlike the cold polar winds that cover it today.
Cause of Extinction
Scientists suggest that the crocodile's excessive reliance on meat made it vulnerable to cosmic catastrophe; following the famous asteroid impact and the depletion of its prey, this species failed to adapt unlike other creatures that managed to live near freshwater or partially rely on plants.
