ترمب لم يقدم إجابة فورية، بل بادر بالسؤال عن جنسية الصحفي. وحين أجابه ليونز بأنه أسترالي، رد ترمب بغضب قائلاً: «برأيي، أنت تضر أستراليا بشدة الآن، زعيمك سيأتي قريباً وسأخبره أنك تحدثت معي بنبرة سيئة».
