أعلنت السلطات النيوزيلندية، اليوم (الإثنين)، مقتل الهارب توم فيليبس برصاص الشرطة، بعد نحو أربع سنوات من اختفائه مع أطفاله الثلاثة في منطقة نائية بالجزيرة الشمالية للبلاد، في قضية شغلت الرأي العام المحلي لسنوات.
تفاصيل الحادثة
بحسب ما صرّحت به نائبة مفوض الشرطة بالوكالة جيل روجرز في مؤتمر صحفي، فإن رجال الشرطة استجابوا لبلاغ عن عملية سطو في وقت مبكر اليوم، حيث واجه أول شرطي وصل إلى الموقع إطلاق نار من مسافة قريبة، وأصيب برصاصة في الرأس.
عقب ذلك، ردت الشرطة بإطلاق النار ما أسفر عن مقتل المهاجم، الذي تبيّن أنه فيليبس.
العثور على طفلين مفقودين
كشفت روجرز عثور الشرطة على اثنين من أطفال فيليبس بالقرب من موقع الحادثة في مخيم نائي، مؤكدة أنهما بخير ولم يتعرضا لأي أذى. وأضافت أنه تم نقلهما إلى مركز طبي لإجراء الفحوصات اللازمة، وكانا بمفردهما ويتعاونان مع السلطات لحظة العثور عليهما.
أما الطفل الثالث، فقد تم احتجازه في موقع الحادثة أثناء العملية الأمنية.
الهروب الطويل والمطاردة
وكان فيليبس قد اختفى في ديسمبر 2021 مع أطفاله الثلاثة الذين كانت أعمارهم آنذاك 8 و7 و5 أعوام. ورغم جهود البحث المكثفة ورصد مكافأة قدرها 80 ألف دولار نيوزيلندي (نحو 47 ألف دولار أمريكي)، ظل فيليبس متوارياً عن الأنظار حتى حادثة اليوم.
إصابة خطيرة لشرطي
أكدت الشرطة أن الشرطي الذي أُصيب بطلق ناري في الرأس خضع لعملية جراحية عاجلة، ومن المتوقع أن يحتاج إلى عدد من العمليات الإضافية، ولا يزال في المستشفى.
صدمة للرأي العام
وصفت روجرز الحادثة بأنها «صادمة للغاية»، مضيفة: «هذه أخبار مدمرة لعائلة توم فيليبس، وهي نتيجة لم يكن يتمناها أحد».
The New Zealand authorities announced today (Monday) the death of fugitive Tom Phillips, shot by police, after nearly four years of his disappearance with his three children in a remote area of the North Island, in a case that has captivated local public opinion for years.
Details of the Incident
According to Acting Police Commissioner Jill Rogers at a press conference, police responded to a report of a robbery early today, where the first officer to arrive at the scene was met with gunfire at close range and was shot in the head.
In response, the police returned fire, resulting in the death of the assailant, who was identified as Phillips.
Finding the Missing Children
Rogers revealed that police found two of Phillips' children near the scene of the incident at a remote campsite, confirming that they were unharmed. She added that they were taken to a medical center for necessary examinations and were alone and cooperating with authorities at the time they were found.
The third child was detained at the scene during the security operation.
The Long Escape and Pursuit
Phillips had disappeared in December 2021 with his three children, who were then aged 8, 7, and 5 years. Despite extensive search efforts and a reward of NZD 80,000 (about USD 47,000), Phillips remained hidden until today's incident.
Serious Injury to Officer
The police confirmed that the officer who was shot in the head underwent emergency surgery and is expected to require several additional operations; he remains in the hospital.
Shock to Public Opinion
Rogers described the incident as "extremely shocking," adding: "This is devastating news for Tom Phillips' family, and it is a result that no one wished for."
