تحوّل نسيان بسيط إلى مفاجأة العمر بالنسبة لرجل متقاعد في ولاية ماريلاند الأمريكية، يُلقب بـ«الجد الفخور»، بعدما حصد جائزة قيمتها مليون دولار في يانصيب «باور بول».
القصة بدأت عندما اشترى الرجل تذكرة سحب في 18 أغسطس مستخدمًا تواريخ ميلاد أفراد عائلته، لكنه لم يتأكد ما إذا كان قد اشترى تذكرة أخرى من قبل، فقرر شراء نسخة ثانية بنفس الأرقام من متجر مختلف. وعند إعلان نتائج سحب «Double Play» الملحق بـ«باور بول»، فوجئ بأن كلتا التذكرتين مطابق للأرقام الفائزة، ليظفر بجائزتين قيمتهما 500 ألف دولار لكل منهما.
وعن رد فعله لحظة إبلاغ زوجته بالفوز، قال مبتسمًا: «إخبارها بأننا ربحنا 500 ألف دولار كان رائعًا، لكن قول إننا ربحنا مليون دولار كان مذهلاً حقًا». وأضاف أن الجائزة ستُخصص لدعم أبنائه وأحفاده، مع وعد بمواصلة تجربة الحظ في سحوبات أخرى.
من جانبها، منحت هيئة يانصيب ماريلاند مكافأة قدرها ألف دولار لكل من المتجرين اللذين باعا التذكرتين، مؤكدة أن لعبة «باور بول» لا تزال من أكبر ألعاب الحظ في الولايات المتحدة، حيث توزع ملايين الدولارات أسبوعيًا وتدعم برامج التعليم والصحة والسلامة العامة.
A simple forgetfulness turned into the surprise of a lifetime for a retired man in Maryland, USA, nicknamed the "proud grandpa," after he won a prize worth one million dollars in the "Powerball" lottery.
The story began when the man bought a ticket on August 18 using the birth dates of his family members, but he wasn't sure if he had bought another ticket earlier, so he decided to purchase a second copy with the same numbers from a different store. When the results of the "Double Play" draw associated with "Powerball" were announced, he was surprised to find that both tickets matched the winning numbers, winning him two prizes of $500,000 each.
Regarding his reaction when he informed his wife about the win, he said with a smile, "Telling her that we won $500,000 was amazing, but saying that we won a million dollars was truly incredible." He added that the prize would be dedicated to supporting his children and grandchildren, with a promise to continue trying his luck in other draws.
For its part, the Maryland Lottery Agency awarded a $1,000 bonus to each of the two stores that sold the tickets, confirming that the "Powerball" game remains one of the largest games of chance in the United States, distributing millions of dollars weekly and supporting education, health, and public safety programs.
