أعلنت السلطات الأمريكية أن المهاجم الذي أطلق النار على تلاميذ كنيسة الأنونسياشن الكاثوليكية في مينيابوليس، مينيسوتا، أثناء قداس مدرسي احتفالي بمناسبة بداية العام الدراسي، في واحدة من أكثر الهجمات المروعة التي شهدتها المدينة، كان «مهووساً بفكرة قتل الأطفال».
ووقع حادث إطلاق النار على تلاميذ كنيسة الأنونسياشن الكاثوليكية، صباح الأربعاء، وأسفر عن مقتل طفلين، فليتشر ميركل (8 سنوات) وهاربر مويسكي (10 سنوات)، وإصابة 18 آخرين، من بينهم 15 طفلاً تراوح أعمارهم بين 6 و15 عاماً، وثلاثة مسنين في الثمانينيات.
ووفقاً لرئيس شرطة مينيابوليس براين أوهارا، تم تحديد هوية المهاجم على أنه روبين ويستمان، 23 عاماً، وهي امرأة متحولة جنسياً، كانت طالبة سابقة في المدرسة، ووالدتها، ماري غريس ويستمان، عملت في مكتب الكنيسة حتى تقاعدها في 2021.
وأطلق ويستمان 116 طلقة نارية من بندقية، وثلاث طلقات من بندقية صيد، وطلقة واحدة من مسدس، قبل أن ينهي حياته بطلقة نارية ذاتية، إذ استخدم المهاجم ثلاثة أسلحة نارية تم شراؤها بشكل قانوني، وحاول دخول الكنيسة لكن الأبواب المغلقة حالت دون ذلك، مما دفعه لإطلاق النار من الخارج عبر النوافذ الزجاجية الملونة.
وكشف المدعي العام المؤقت لمينيسوتا، جوزيف طومسون، أن كتابات ويستمان وفيديوهات نشرها على يوتيوب، والتي حُذفت لاحقاً، كشفت عن «هوس مضطرب» بقتل الأطفال وتقليد القتلة الجماعيين.
وأشار المدعي العام أن ويستمان عبر عن كراهية واسعة النطاق تجاه مجموعات مختلفة، بما في ذلك السود، المكسيكيون، المسيحيون، اليهود، وحتى الرئيس دونالد ترمب، إذ كتب عبارات مثل «اقتلوا دونالد ترمب»، و«إسرائيل يجب أن تسقط» على أسلحتها، مؤكداً أن المهاجم «كان يبدو أنه يكره الجميع»، لكنه كان يعجب فقط بالقتلة الجماعيين.
وأثار الحادث موجة حزن عارمة في مينيابوليس، إذ تجمع مئات الأشخاص في نصب تذكاري أمام الكنيسة، تاركين الزهور والدببة القطنية. وخلال وقفة احتجاجية حضرها حاكم مينيسوتا تيم والز، دعا رئيس البلدية جاكوب فراي إلى حظر الأسلحة الهجومية ومخازن الذخيرة عالية السعة، مؤكداً أن «الصلوات ليست كافية».
The U.S. authorities announced that the attacker who opened fire on students at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during a school mass celebrating the start of the academic year, in one of the most horrific attacks the city has witnessed, was "obsessed with the idea of killing children."
The shooting incident at the Annunciation Catholic Church occurred on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of two children, Fletcher Merkel (8 years old) and Harper Moiski (10 years old), and injuring 18 others, including 15 children aged between 6 and 15 years, and three elderly individuals in their eighties.
According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara, the attacker was identified as Rubin Westman, 23, a transgender woman who was a former student at the school, and her mother, Mary Grace Westman, worked at the church office until her retirement in 2021.
Westman fired 116 rounds from a rifle, three rounds from a shotgun, and one round from a pistol, before ending her life with a self-inflicted gunshot, as the attacker used three firearms that were legally purchased and attempted to enter the church but was thwarted by locked doors, prompting her to shoot from outside through the stained glass windows.
Interim Minnesota Attorney General Joseph Thompson revealed that Westman's writings and videos she posted on YouTube, which were later deleted, indicated a "disturbed obsession" with killing children and emulating mass murderers.
The Attorney General noted that Westman expressed widespread hatred towards various groups, including Black people, Mexicans, Christians, Jews, and even President Donald Trump, writing phrases like "kill Donald Trump" and "Israel must fall" on her weapons, emphasizing that the attacker "seemed to hate everyone," but only admired mass murderers.
The incident sparked an overwhelming wave of grief in Minneapolis, as hundreds gathered at a memorial outside the church, leaving flowers and teddy bears. During a protest attended by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Mayor Jacob Frey called for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, asserting that "thoughts and prayers are not enough."
