احتفلت إيثيل كاتيرام، التي تُعد أكبر شخص على قيد الحياة وفقًا لموسوعة غينيس للأرقام القياسية، بعيد ميلادها الـ116 وسط أجواء هادئة مع عائلتها في دار الرعاية التي تقيم بها في لايتووتر، ساري، إنجلترا.
واختارت كاتيرام، المعروفة بأسلوب حياتها البسيط وحبها للخصوصية، قضاء يوم ميلادها في جو عائلي هادئ، رافضة إجراء أي مقابلات إعلامية، وأصدرت دار الرعاية «هالمارك لوكسوري كير هومز» بيانًا نيابة عنها، جاء فيه: «إيثيل وعائلتها ممتنون جدًا لجميع الرسائل الطيبة والاهتمام الذي أُظهر لها بمناسبة عيد ميلادها الـ116 هذا العام».
وأشار البيان إلى أن إيثيل اختارت قضاء اليوم بهدوء مع عائلتها لتستمتع به وفق سرعتها الخاصة، وأن الملك قد يكون استثناءها الوحيد، وأنها تلقت رسالة تهنئة من الملك تشارلز الثالث، الذي وصف إنجازها بـ«الرائع حقًا»، كما فعل في عيد ميلادها الـ115 العام الماضي.
وأصدرت موسوعة غينيس للأرقام القياسية بيانًا رسميًا هنأت فيه كاتيرام، قائلة: «نتمنى لإيثيل كاتيرام عيد ميلاد سعيد! نحتفل بحياتها المذهلة حتى الآن ونتمنى لها الأفضل في عيد ميلادها الـ116»، كما أُطلق على جزء من حديقة دار الرعاية اسم «حديقة إيثيل» تكريمًا لها، حيث تحب قضاء وقتها مستمتعة بالموسيقى الكلاسيكية وأصوات الطيور.
وتعد إيثيل كاتيرام الشخصية الثالثة في تاريخ بريطانيا التي تصل إلى سن 115 عامًا، والأولى منذ آني جينينغز في عام 1999، وأصبحت أكبر معمرة في العالم في 30 أبريل الماضي، بعد وفاة الراهبة البرازيلية إينا كانابارو لوكاس عن عمر 116 عامًا، حيث وُلدت كاتيرام في عام 1909، في عصر إدواردي وصف بأنه «زمن الترف، حيث كانت النساء يرتدين قبعات مزخرفة ولم يكن لهن حق التصويت»، وشهدت أحداثًا تاريخية مثل غرق التيتانيك، الحربين العالميتين، وستة ملوك بريطانيين.
وعاشت كاتيرام حياة مليئة بالمغامرات، وفي سن الثامنة عشرة، سافرت إلى الهند للعمل كمربية أطفال لعائلة بريطانية، وأمضت ثلاث سنوات هناك، وفي عام 1931، التقت بزوجها المستقبلي، نورمان كاتيرام، وهو رائد في الجيش البريطاني، وتزوجا في كاتدرائية سالزبوري عام 1933، وعاش الزوجان في هونغ كونغ وجبل طارق، حيث أسست إيثيل روضة لتعليم الأطفال المحليين والبريطانيين اللغة الإنجليزية.

Ethel Caterham, recognized as the oldest living person according to the Guinness World Records, celebrated her 116th birthday in a calm atmosphere with her family at the care home where she resides in Lightwater, Surrey, England.
Caterham, known for her simple lifestyle and love for privacy, chose to spend her birthday in a quiet family setting, declining to give any media interviews. The care home "Hallmark Luxury Care Homes" issued a statement on her behalf, stating: "Ethel and her family are very grateful for all the kind messages and the attention shown to her on the occasion of her 116th birthday this year."
The statement noted that Ethel chose to spend the day quietly with her family to enjoy it at her own pace, and that the king might be her only exception, as she received a congratulatory message from King Charles III, who described her achievement as "truly remarkable," just as he did on her 115th birthday last year.
The Guinness World Records also issued an official statement congratulating Caterham, saying: "We wish Ethel Caterham a happy birthday! We celebrate her amazing life so far and wish her the best on her 116th birthday." A part of the care home’s garden has been named "Ethel's Garden" in her honor, where she enjoys spending her time listening to classical music and the sounds of birds.
Ethel Caterham is the third person in British history to reach the age of 115, and the first since Annie Jennings in 1999. She became the world's oldest living person on April 30, after the death of Brazilian nun Ina Canabarro Lucas at the age of 116. Caterham was born in 1909, during the Edwardian era, described as "a time of luxury, when women wore elaborate hats and did not have the right to vote." She has witnessed historical events such as the sinking of the Titanic, both World Wars, and six British monarchs.
Caterham has lived an adventurous life. At the age of eighteen, she traveled to India to work as a nanny for a British family, spending three years there. In 1931, she met her future husband, Norman Caterham, a British Army officer, and they married at Salisbury Cathedral in 1933. The couple lived in Hong Kong and Gibraltar, where Ethel established a nursery to teach local and British children English.
Caterham is also the oldest Briton ever, surpassing Charlotte Hughes (1877-1993), who was the last living person born in 1909, and the only remaining subject of King Edward VII. However, the world record for the oldest person ever remains with Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122 years and 164 days old until her death in 1997.
