The New York State Thruway near the town of Pembroke, about 40 kilometers east of Buffalo, witnessed a horrific accident when a tour bus carrying 54 passengers lost control, overturned, and slid into a ditch on the side of the road. The accident resulted in the deaths of five adult passengers and injured dozens, including children, in one of the most tragic incidents on New York roads this year.

According to the New York State Police, the bus was returning to New York City after a sightseeing trip to Niagara Falls when the accident occurred around 12:30 PM local time on the highway. Captain Andre Ray, a police spokesperson, reported that the driver, who survived the accident, "lost control of the bus due to distraction," causing it to veer into the median and then overcorrect, resulting in it overturning into a ditch on the right side of the road.

Preliminary investigations ruled out any mechanical failure or drug influence on the driver, but confirmed that the accident caused significant damage to the bus, with its windows shattered and passengers' belongings scattered on the road. Many passengers were extricated from the bus, while others were trapped inside the wreckage, necessitating a swift response from rescue teams. Medical flight helicopters transported at least five injured individuals to local hospitals, while Erie Medical Center in Buffalo treated 24 patients, including two in intensive care and two who underwent surgeries.
