وجّهت هيئة محلفين في أمريكا اتهامات إلى عمدة نيو أورليانز لاتويا كانتريل، شملت التآمر والاحتيال وعرقلة التحقيقات، على خلفية مزاعم بمحاولتها إخفاء علاقتها بحارسها الشخصي.
ويأتي ذلك بعد تحقيق اتحادي مطوّل شمل كانتريل، التي تُعد أول امرأة تتولى منصب العمدة في تاريخ المدينة الممتد 300 عام.
من جانبه، دفع فابي، الذي تقاعد العام الماضي من جهاز الشرطة، ببراءته بعد توجيه تهم إليه تتعلق بالاحتيال الإلكتروني وتقديم بيانات كاذبة حول ساعات عمله.
كما اتهمه المدعون بإخفاء علاقته مع العمدة وتقديم سجلات رواتب مزوّرة، فضلاً عن تبادل رسائل مشفرة معها عبر تطبيقات سرية قبل حذفها.
ومن المقرر أن يمثل فابي للمحاكمة في يناير القادم، بينما تصرّ العمدة وحارسها السابق على أن علاقتهما كانت مهنية بحتة.
A grand jury in the United States has charged New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell with conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction of investigations, following allegations that she attempted to conceal her relationship with her personal security guard.
This comes after a lengthy federal investigation involving Cantrell, who is the first woman to hold the mayoral office in the city's 300-year history.
For his part, Fabi, who retired last year from the police department, pleaded not guilty after being charged with electronic fraud and providing false information about his working hours.
He was also accused by prosecutors of concealing his relationship with the mayor and submitting forged payroll records, as well as exchanging encrypted messages with her via secret apps before deleting them.
Fabi is set to stand trial next January, while both the mayor and her former guard insist that their relationship was purely professional.
