ضرب إعصار بودول جنوب تايوان، اليوم (الأربعاء)، حاملًا رياحًا بلغت سرعتها 191 كم/ساعة (118 ميلًا/ساعة)، مخلفًا شخصًا مفقودًا و33 إصابة، وتسبب في إغلاق واسع النطاق للجزيرة وإلغاء مئات الرحلات الجوية.
وتتعرض تايوان بشكل متكرر للأعاصير، خصوصا على ساحلها الشرقي الجبلي المطل على المحيط الهادئ.
ووصل الإعصار إلى مدينة تايتونغ الجنوبية الشرقية نحو الساعة الواحدة ظهرًا (0500 بتوقيت غرينتش)، ثم اجتاز الطرف الجنوبي للجزيرة وتوجه نحو مضيق تايوان بعد ثلاث ساعات، وفقًا لإدارة الأرصاد الجوية المركزية في تايوان.
ومن المتوقع أن يصل الإعصار إلى الساحل الجنوبي للصين في وقت متأخر من الأربعاء أو الخميس، مما يؤثر على مقاطعتي فوجيان وغواندونغ، حسبما ذكرت قناة CCTV الصينية.
وأعلنت تسع مدن ومقاطعات تايوانية، بما في ذلك مدينتا كاوشيونغ وتاينان الجنوبيتان، تعليق العمل والدراسة، اليوم.
وفي العاصمة تايبيه، مركز الأسواق المالية في تايوان، هبت رياح قوية دون أن تؤثر بشكل كبير على المدينة.

وتوقعت إدارة الأرصاد الجوية هطول أمطار تصل إلى 600 ملم (24 بوصة) في المناطق الجبلية الجنوبية خلال الأيام القادمة.
وكانت بعض المناطق الجنوبية قد شهدت هطول أمطار خلال أسبوع واحد هذا الشهر تتجاوز معدل سنة كاملة، مما تسبب في انزلاقات أرضية وفيضانات واسعة النطاق، وأسفر عن وفاة أربعة أشخاص.
Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Haikui in the south today (Wednesday), carrying winds that reached speeds of 191 km/h (118 mph), leaving one person missing and 33 injured, and causing widespread closures across the island and the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
Taiwan is frequently subjected to typhoons, especially along its mountainous eastern coast facing the Pacific Ocean.
The typhoon reached the southeastern city of Taitung around 1 PM (0500 GMT), then crossed the southern tip of the island and headed towards the Taiwan Strait after three hours, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau.
The typhoon is expected to reach the southern coast of China late Wednesday or Thursday, affecting the provinces of Fujian and Guangdong, as reported by Chinese CCTV.
Nine Taiwanese cities and counties, including the southern cities of Kaohsiung and Tainan, announced the suspension of work and studies today.
In the capital Taipei, the financial hub of Taiwan, strong winds blew without significantly affecting the city.
More than 5,500 people were evacuated before the typhoon's arrival, especially those whose homes were damaged by a previous typhoon in July, which caused significant damage to the electricity network on the island's western coast.
All domestic flights, totaling 252, along with 155 international flights, were canceled, according to the Ministry of Transportation.
Taiwan's two main airlines, China Airlines and EVA Air, announced the cancellation of flights from Kaohsiung and some flights from the main Taoyuan International Airport.
The weather bureau predicted rainfall of up to 600 mm (24 inches) in the southern mountainous areas over the coming days.
Some southern areas experienced rainfall this month that exceeded the average for an entire year within just one week, causing landslides and widespread flooding, resulting in the deaths of four people.
