ووفقا لهيئة الطوارئ الروسية، وقع الحادث عندما حاولت حافلة السياحية التي كانت تقل مجموعة من الركاب، عبور معبر سكة حديد في منطقة لينينغراد، ولم تتمكن من التوقف في الوقت المناسب، ما أدى إلى اصطدامها بقطار بضائع كان يمر في تلك اللحظة، وأدى التصادم إلى أضرار جسيمة في الحافلة، وأسفر عن مقتل شخصين على الفور وإصابة عشرة آخرين بجروح متفاوتة، وتم نقلهم إلى مستشفيات المنطقة لتلقي العلاج.
