تصاعدت التوترات بين تايلند وكمبوديا اليوم (الخميس) بعد أن قصفت مقاتلة تايلندية من طراز إف-16 أهدافاً عسكرية داخل الأراضي الكمبودية، في إطار نزاع حدودي مستمر منذ عقود.
وقالت القوات المسلحة التايلندية إن إحدى المقاتلات الست التي أعدتها للانتشار على طول الحدود المتنازع عليها دمرت هدفاً عسكرياً كمبودياً، واتهمت كل دولة الأخرى ببدء الاشتباكات التي اندلعت في ساعات الصباح الأولى.
وأدت الاشتباكات، وفقاً لوكالة «رويترز»، إلى مقتل مدنيين اثنين على الأقل، حيث أفادت السلطات التايلندية بإجلاء نحو 40 ألف مدني من 86 قرية قريبة من الحدود في إقليم سورين إلى ملاجئ آمنة.
وأغلقت تايلند حدودها مع كمبوديا، فيما أدانت وزارة الدفاع الكمبودية ما وصفته بـ«العدوان العسكري التايلندي الوحشي»، مشيرة إلى أن المقاتلات ألقت قنبلتين على طريق في المنطقة.
وكانت التوترات قد تجددت في مايو الماضي بعد مقتل جندي كمبودي في تبادل لإطلاق النار، ما أدى إلى أزمة دبلوماسية حادة.
وتصاعدت الأمور أكثر بعد أن اتهمت تايلند كمبوديا بزرع ألغام أرضية جديدة في منطقة طا موان ثوم المتنازع عليها، ما تسبب في إصابة 3 جنود تايلنديين، بينما نفت كمبوديا هذه الادعاءات، مؤكدة أن الألغام تعود إلى الحرب الأهلية التي شهدتها البلاد قبل عقود.
وأفادت تقارير بأن القوات الكمبودية استخدمت طائرة مسيرة للمراقبة قبل نشر قوات مسلحة بأسلحة ثقيلة، في حين زعمت تايلند أن القوات الكمبودية بدأت إطلاق النار، ما أدى إلى إصابة جنديين تايلنديين.
من جانبها، قالت كمبوديا إن قواتها ردت دفاعاً عن النفس بعد اقتحام تايلندي غير مبرر.
وأشار رئيس الوزراء التايلندي المؤقت فومثام ويتشاياشاي إلى أن الوضع حساس للغاية، مؤكداً التزام بلاده بالقوانين الدولية.
وفي سياق متصل، تسبب تسرب مكالمة هاتفية بين رئيسة الوزراء التايلندية بايتونغتارن شيناواترا والزعيم الكمبودي السابق هون سين في عاصفة سياسية، أدت إلى تعليق عمل رئيسة الوزراء بقرار قضائي.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated today (Thursday) after a Thai F-16 fighter jet bombed military targets inside Cambodian territory, as part of a border dispute that has lasted for decades.
The Thai armed forces stated that one of the six fighter jets prepared for deployment along the disputed border destroyed a Cambodian military target, with each country accusing the other of initiating the clashes that broke out in the early hours of the morning.
The clashes, according to Reuters, resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians, as Thai authorities reported the evacuation of about 40,000 civilians from 86 villages near the border in Surin province to safe shelters.
Thailand closed its border with Cambodia, while the Cambodian Ministry of Defense condemned what it described as "brutal Thai military aggression," noting that the fighter jets dropped two bombs on a road in the area.
Tensions had reignited last May after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a gunfight, leading to a sharp diplomatic crisis.
Things escalated further after Thailand accused Cambodia of planting new landmines in the disputed Ta Moan Thom area, resulting in injuries to three Thai soldiers, while Cambodia denied these allegations, asserting that the mines date back to the civil war that the country experienced decades ago.
Reports indicated that Cambodian forces used a surveillance drone before deploying armed forces with heavy weapons, while Thailand claimed that Cambodian forces began firing, resulting in injuries to two Thai soldiers.
For its part, Cambodia stated that its forces responded in self-defense after an unprovoked Thai incursion.
Thai Prime Minister acting Prawit Wongsuwan indicated that the situation is very sensitive, reaffirming his country's commitment to international laws.
In a related context, a leaked phone call between Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen caused a political storm, leading to the suspension of the Prime Minister's duties by a court ruling.
