أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب عن خطة لنشر وحدات تكتيكية تابعة لهيئة الهجرة والجمارك (ICE) في خمس مدن يديرها الديمقراطيون، وسط أعمال شغب عنيفة تشهدها لوس أنجلوس.
وتشمل المدن المستهدفة نيويورك، سياتل، شيكاغو، فيلادلفيا، وشمال فيرجينيا، وفقاً لتقرير شبكة MSNBC، أربع من هذه المدن تُعد معاقل ديمقراطية، بينما تضم شمال فيرجينيا مدينة ألكساندريا، وهي منطقة ديمقراطية بارزة.
أثارت هذه الخطوة احتجاجات واسعة في لوس أنجلوس، مما دفع عمدة المدينة كارين باس إلى فرض حظر تجوال من الساعة 8 مساءً حتى 6 صباحاً.
وفي خطاب متلفز، وجه حاكم كاليفورنيا غافن نيوسوم انتقادات حادة لترمب، محذراً من أن نشر القوات العسكرية في لوس أنجلوس يشكل تهديداً للديمقراطية.
وقال نيوسوم، وهو يكاد يبكي، إن قرار ترمب بمنح سلطة شاملة للتحكم في الحرس الوطني يطال جميع الولايات، مضيفاً: هذه ليست مجرد احتجاجات في لوس أنجلوس، بل هجوم على الديمقراطية نفسها.
واتهم نيوسوم ترمب بهدم مشروع الآباء المؤسسين للحفاظ على توازن السلطات الثلاث.
وفي الوقت نفسه، ألقى ترمب خطاباً في قاعدة فورت براغ العسكرية، دافع فيه عن قرار نشر القوات، واصفاً المتظاهرين بالحيوانات والأعداء الأجانب الذين يحاولون عرقلة سياسات الهجرة.
وأضاف: لن نسمح لغزو أجنبي باحتلال مدينة أمريكية، واصفاً لوس أنجلوس بأنها كومة قمامة تسيطر عليها العصابات.
وفي لوس أنجلوس، فرضت الشرطة حظر تجوال في وسط المدينة بعد أيام من أعمال الشغب التي تضمنت حرق سيارات ونهب متاجر ومهاجمة الشرطة بالحجارة والألعاب النارية.
وبدأت وحدات مكافحة الشغب في الانتشار حول المبنى الفيدرالي، مع تشكيل خطوط تصادم لصد المتظاهرين. وشهدت المدينة اعتقال العشرات، بينما تحدى بعض المتظاهرين الشرطة رافعين الأعلام والهتافات.
وفي مدن أخرى، شهدت نيويورك اعتقال 45 متظاهراً، مع حمل بعضهم أعلاماً فلسطينية وشعارات تطالب بإلغاء هيئة الهجرة والجمارك.
وفي شيكاغو، صدم سائق سيارة مجموعة من المتظاهرين، مما أدى إلى إصابة شخص على الأقل. كما شهدت بورتلاند وأوستن وأتلانتا احتجاجات مماثلة، مع أعمال تخريب واشتباكات مع الشرطة.
وحذر نيوسوم من أن هذه الأزمة قد تمتد إلى ولايات أخرى، متهماً ترمب بتبني أساليب استبدادية واستهداف الأضعف، بينما أشار إلى إقالة ترمب لمراقبي الحكومة ومهاجمته للثقافة والعلم.
في المقابل، هدد ترمب بتفعيل قانون التمرد لقمع الاحتجاجات، مؤكداً أن لوس أنجلوس تشهد تمرداً يتطلب تدخلاً عسكرياً.
ورداً على ذلك، تقدم نيوسوم بطلب قضائي عاجل لوقف نشر القوات، معتبراً أن استخدام الجيش ضد المواطنين غير قانوني، لكن القاضي رفض الطلب مؤقتاً، ومنح الحكومة الفيدرالية مهلة حتى ظهر الأربعاء للرد.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a plan to deploy tactical units from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in five cities run by Democrats, amid violent riots in Los Angeles.
The targeted cities include New York, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Northern Virginia, according to a report by MSNBC. Four of these cities are considered Democratic strongholds, while Northern Virginia includes Alexandria, a prominent Democratic area.
This move sparked widespread protests in Los Angeles, prompting the city's mayor, Karen Bass, to impose a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM.
In a televised address, California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticized Trump, warning that the deployment of military forces in Los Angeles poses a threat to democracy.
Newsom, nearly in tears, stated that Trump's decision to grant sweeping authority over the National Guard affects all states, adding: This is not just a protest in Los Angeles, but an attack on democracy itself.
Newsom accused Trump of undermining the founding fathers' project to maintain the balance of the three branches of government.
Meanwhile, Trump delivered a speech at Fort Bragg military base, defending the decision to deploy troops, describing the protesters as animals and foreign enemies trying to disrupt immigration policies.
He added: We will not allow a foreign invasion to occupy an American city, describing Los Angeles as a garbage heap controlled by gangs.
In Los Angeles, police imposed a curfew in the downtown area after days of riots that included car burnings, store looting, and attacks on police with stones and fireworks.
Riot control units began to spread around the federal building, forming lines to repel the protesters. The city witnessed dozens of arrests, while some protesters challenged the police by raising flags and chanting.
In other cities, New York saw the arrest of 45 protesters, with some carrying Palestinian flags and slogans calling for the abolition of ICE.
In Chicago, a driver struck a group of protesters, injuring at least one person. Portland, Austin, and Atlanta also witnessed similar protests, with acts of vandalism and clashes with police.
Newsom warned that this crisis could extend to other states, accusing Trump of adopting authoritarian methods and targeting the vulnerable, while pointing to Trump's dismissal of government watchdogs and his attacks on culture and science.
In response, Trump threatened to activate the Insurrection Act to suppress the protests, asserting that Los Angeles is experiencing an insurrection that requires military intervention.
In response, Newsom filed an urgent court request to stop the deployment of troops, arguing that using the military against citizens is illegal, but the judge temporarily denied the request, giving the federal government until Wednesday afternoon to respond.
